GANANDA, NY – The University of Rochester golf team finished off a stellar performance to open the 2023-24 season, capturing first and second place at the St. John Fisher Invitational on Monday at Blue Heron Hills Golf Club.
 
Graduate student Brendan Frain earned tournament medalist honors, finishing as the lone player under par, carding a 3-under score of 210 for the 54-hole event. Rochester's 'A' lineup won the eight-team event with a two-day score of 873, carding its third straight score of 291 during Monday's final round.
 
The Yellowjacket 'B' lineup wound up in second place with an 890 team score over the three rounds. St. John Fisher's 'A' and 'B' teams made up third and fourth, while Penn State-Behrend completed the top-5. Oswego State, Hobart and Nazareth completed the event field.
 
Overall, nine of UR's ten golfers finished in the top-15 on the individual standings, with senior Tom Liu and first-year Shibo Wang tying for second place at 1-over, 214. Liu, a member of UR's 'A' lineup shot a 75 on Monday, while Wang, represented in the 'B' lineup finished his tournament with a 73.
 
Another Rochester first-year, Arjun Aujla, ended with a 75 and completed play in solo fifth with a 222 score for the 'B' roster. Kerry Wang, another 'A' lineup member, ended one shot behind in sixth, carding a 71 in the final round to close at 223 for the event.
 
Both Jeffrey Li (B) and Josh Pethel (A) finished at 229 for the 54-hole tournament and wound up in a tie for eighth. Li closed with a 75, while Pethel carded a 76 on Monday.
 
Marshall Kim (B) finished tied for 12th (231) after a 73 in the final round, while Gary Pan (B) placed tied for 14th (233) after shooting 78. Jonathan Zou (A) wrapped up the UR golfers in 19th place (235), shooting a 76 in his final round.
 
Rochester is back in action next weekend at the Williams Fall Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Taconic Golf Club.
