The University of Rochester men's swimming & diving team earned their first dual-meet win of the year, defeating the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons, 186-110, on Saturday afternoon at the Speegle-Wilbraham Aquatic Center.
Rochester's swimmers and divers took home the top spot in 12-of-16 events, with two 'Jackets:
Max McClung and
Jack Zapp, each earning a trio of wins, while three more:
Connor Kann,
Michael Scholz and
Brian Wong were double winners.
McClung and Zapp earned their first win of the day in the first event of the afternoon, the 200-yard medley relay, as both UR's 'A' and 'B' relay teams tied atop the podium. UR's 'A' relay team of McClung, Zapp,
Eli Muldoon and
Ben Friedberg matched the time of the 'B' relay squad:
Venden Berge,
Brian Wong,
Demo Hong and
Jeremy Mah, with both touching the wall in 1:36.74.
McClung added his two other wins in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke, winning the 200 butterfly with a 1:59.53 time, and taking home first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:58.24. While individually, Zapp finished atop the podium in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.67) and 200 IM (2:01.02).
Max Gjevre joined Zapp on the podium in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:02.09 to finish second, while
Chad Buccella notched his second of two third-place results in the 200 IM (2:08.97), adding another in the 200 breaststroke earlier in the day with a time of 2:19.62.
Wong took home the top spot in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.95) to score his second win of the day after earning his first in the 200 medley relay to open the dual meet.
Kann scored his two wins individually, winning both the 100 backstroke (54.31) and the 500 freestyle (4:56.60), while Scholz finished atop the podium in the 100 and 200 freestyle, clocking in at 47.84 in the 100 and 1:48.76 in the 200.
Both Kann and Scholz led a pair of 'Jackets among the top-three finishers in all four events, with Berge taking second behind Kann in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.57, while Mah finished close behind Kann in the 500 freestyle at 5:05.92.
In the 200 freestyle,
Noah Falkenhagen took second place, touching the wall in 1:50.59, just a few ticks behind Scholz, while
Nate Attwell earned a second-place spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.50.
Attwell also earned a second-place result in the 1,000 freestyle, finishing second with a time of 10:30.04, behind UR's first-place finisher, Bryce Berkoff (10:08.94).
Max Wozinski added Rochester's last event win of the day in the three-meter dive, taking first with a score of 234.95. Wozinski was also UR's top finisher in the one-meter with a 238.65 score, while
Brendan Habert joined Wozinski on the three-meter podium with 233.05 points.
Elsewhere on the day, Mah was UR's highest finisher in the 50 freestyle, scoring third place in the event with a 22.04 time, while Hong and Mulhood finished second and third in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 52.74 and 53.31, respectively.
Rochester finished off the day with the 200-freestyle relay, taking home second and third place with it's 'A' and 'B' relay squads. Kann, Mah, Attwell and Friedberg combined to touch the wall in 1:27.46, good for second place, while Scholz, Wong, Hong and McClung finished third with a time of 1:28.29.
The Yellowjackets are next in action when they host Alfred and Fredonia for a tri-meet on Saturday, Nov. 8 beginning at 12:00 p.m. inside the the Speegle-Wilbraham Aquatic Center.
