Men’s Swim & Dive Drops Closely-Contested Dual at Grove City

GROVE CITY, PA – The University of Rochester men's swimming and diving team saw their four-match win steak snapped as they fell to the Grove City College Wolverines, 152-142, in a dual meet at James E. Longnecker Competition Pool on Saturday.
 
The two sides were neck-and-neck throughout the meet and stood separated by just six points heading into the final two events of the day, before the Wolverines clinched the win in the 400 IM, and then took two of the top-three spots in the 200 freestyle relay.
 
Max McClung was a double-winner for the Jackets, taking home individual wins in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke and finishing second in the 200-yard medley relay. McClung, along with Brian Wong, Eli Muldoon and Michael Scholz, finished second in the 200 medley with a time of 1:35.75, while UR's 'B' team of Johnathan Wu, Max Gjevre, Demo Hong and Ben Friedberg came in third with a time of 1:40.79.
 
In the 100-yard backstroke, McClung touched the wall first in 52.47 seconds, while in the 200-yard backstroke, McClung won with a time of 1:56.67. The junior also took second in the 100-yard butterfly (51.61), while Hong was a few seconds behind him at 53.16 in third place.
 
Rochester had three more double-winners: Friedberg, Brendan Habert and Kann. Friedberg, after swimming in the 200-yard medley relay, finished atop the podium in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 21.93 seconds, and added another win in the final event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay.
 
Friedberg joined Nate Attwell, Kann and Scholz in taking home first with a time of 1:27.57 in the 200 freestyle relay, wrapping up the dual for the Yellowjackets.
 
Habert won both diving events, which took place on Friday. Habert won the three-meter with a 266.66 score, while Max Wozinski finished second, tallying a score of 251.71.
 
Then in the one-meter, Habert again took first, scoring 232.50, while Wozinski finished second, scoring 230.85.
 
Kann added his first win earlier in the meet in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the all in 1:45.82, with Attwell close behind in second place at 1:49.06, while Wu made it three 'Jackets atop the podium with his third-place time of 1:50.75.
 
Kann also added a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.78), again taking two spots on the podium alongside Attwell, who scored third place with his 5:00.06 time.
 
In addition to his win in the relays, Scholz added second and third-place results in the 50-yard freestyle (2nd, 22.05) and 100-yard freestyle (3rd, 48.53).
 
Jack Zapp notched Rochester's last win of the day, finishing first in the 200-yard breaststroke. Zapp clocked in at 2:13.12, while Wong took second with his 2:13.24 time. Zapp also placed in the 400-yard IM, clocking in at 4:19.52, good for second place.
 
Following the Thanksgiving Break, the Yellowjackets next compete at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational, beginning on Friday, Dec. 6 at 6:00 p.m. in Ithaca, NY.
