Golfers Open Spring Season In North Carolina

PINEHURST, NC/SEVEN LAKES, NC – The University of Rochester golf team opened its spring schedule on Sunday by competing as a split squad at two events hosted by Hampden-Sydney College, with six of ten golfers shooting 80 or better for the Yellowjackets on the opening day of competition.
 
Rochester's 'A' team sits in 15th of 18 teams at the Tiger Invite at Forest Creek Golf Club, shooting a team score of 310. The 'B' squad is in third among 11 teams at the Hampden-Sydney Invite at Seven Lakes Country Club, scoring 315 on day one. Many of Division III's top teams are taking part in both events.
 
Leading UR in the Tiger Invite on Sunday was graduate student Brendan Frain who shot a 2-over 74 on the par-72, 6,925-yard layout at Forest Creek GC. Frain's scorecard featured two birdies and four bogeys, finishing at 1-over for both the inward and outward nine. Frain is tied for 22nd in the field.
 
First-year Shibo Wang ended one shot behind Frain with a 75 in his opening round, ranking tied for 30th on the individual leaderboard. The rookie led the 'Jackets with four birdies on his scorecard, including one on both the ninth and 18th holes, both of which are par-5's.

Pan is tied for sixth in his event.

Sophomore Josh Pethel shot an 80 in round one, while Kerry Wang ended at 81. Tom Liu wrapped up the 'A' squad with a round of 83. Pethel sits in 69th, Wang is 73rd and Liu is 82nd in the field.
 
Across town at Seven Lakes CC, Gary Pan and Jonathan Zou both fired opening round 77's for the 'B' squad. That score ended at 6-over, with Seven Lakes going as a par-71, 6,561-yard course.
 
Both players are tied for sixth in their event. Zou started out strong, with birdies on his first two holes. He ended with four holes under par on his round. Pan had two birdies and 11 pars on his scorecard and sits just two shots behind second place overall.
 
First-year Arjun Aujla carded an 80 to open his spring season, while Marshall Kim's 81 was added as UR's fourth counting score in the opening round. Jeffrey Li shot 86 in his first round. Aujla is tied for 22nd, Kim is also in the top-30 at T-27th and Li sits in a tie for 43rd.
 
Both tournaments wrap up action on Monday with tee times starting in the morning.
