UR Battles Elements at Kravetz Invitational

PITTSFORD, NY – The University of Rochester golf team battled the wind, rain and cold at the annual Fred Kravetz Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Oak Hill Country Club, wrapping up play in fourth place.
 
The tournament, originally scheduled for 36 holes, saw day one get canceled due to a wet course and poor conditions at Irondequoit Country Club on Friday.
 
Rochester's team score on Sunday ended up at 312, ranking fourth among the six teams in the field. Nationally ranked Kenyon College took the team title, snapping Rochester's run of three straight championships dating back to 2021.
 
Kenyon shot 300 to rank first, followed by Gettysburg College at 306 and Denison was third with a 307 team score. Rochester's 'B' team ended in fifth place at 325, with Hobart College finishing in sixth with a 329 score.
 
Leading UR's 'A' group was senior Tom Liu who shot a 7-over, 77 on Saturday. He fired a tournament best four birdies in the round, including back-to-back holes under par on the fifth and sixth. He wrapped up the event in ninth place.
 
Both junior Gary Pan and senior Kerry Wang finished tied for 10th in the field with rounds of 78. Pan had 12 pars on his card, while Wang recorded a pair of birdies and ten bogeys to reach the 8-over par score.
 
UR's fourth scorer on the 'A' team was graduate student Brendan Frain who shot a 79 in Saturday's round. Frain also had two birdies on his scorecard and finished a solid +2 on his back nine holes, ending the event in a tie for 15th. Shibo Wang completed the 'A' squad lineup and shot 83.
 
Leading the 'B' team and finishing with the low Rochester score in the event was sophomore Josh Pethel who finished in eighth place after recording a 76 in his round. Jonathan Zou matched Frain in a tie for 15th with a 79.
 
Senior Jeffrey Li carded an 82 to rank tied for 23rd. Marshall Kim ended 28th with an 88, and teammate Arjun Aujla was one spot behind with an 89.
 
Rochester now shifts its focus to the upcoming Liberty League Championships that is set to take place on April 26-28 at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY. That event will feature the team champion earning an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
