HERSHEY, PA – Four golfers in the University of Rochester golf teams starting lineup broke 80 and the Yellowjackets sit in a tie for 6th place among 16 teams at the Hershey Cup at Hershey Country Club on Sunday afternoon.
Overall, UR's day one team score was 309, a +25 round at the par-71, 6,500-yard Hershey CC East course layout. Wittenberg University sits in first place with a 301 on day one. McDaniel and NYU are one shot back in a tie for second place.
Rochester's leader on day one was senior
Tom Liu who shot a 5-over, 76. Liu had 12 pars on his scorecard along with a pair of birdies. He is in a tie for 18th on the individual leaderboard.
Both graduate student
Brendan Frain and junior
Gary Pan each shot 6-over rounds of 77 to rank in a tie for 25th place. Pan's round was highlighted by back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes.
The fourth scoring golfer in Rochester's lineup was senior
Kerry Wang who shot an opening round 79 (+8). First-year
Shibo Wang's 81 score did not count, but he led the Yellowjackets with four birdies on his round, all coming on par-4 holes. Both rank inside the top-50 golfers.
Rochester also had two individuals compete in the event, with both shooting 80 or better in round one. Sophomore
Josh Pethel also had back-to-back birdies on holes five and six, en route to an 80 (+9).
Jonathan Zou finished at 79 (8-over) on Sunday, with his scorecard also featuring two birdies.
Day two's tee times begin at 8:30 am on Monday, with Rochester's groupings starting at 9:15 am off of tee number one.
