BOULDER CITY, NV – The University of Rochester golf team saw its season come to a close on day two at the NCAA Division III Championships on Wednesday, with the Yellowjackets wrapping up the 2024 campaign in 28th place at nationals.
Rochester as a team shot 311 on day two, as scores across the board were higher throughout action at both courses. Swirling and gusty winds, along with sweltering temperatures were the root cause of the higher scores.
Wednesday's round for the Yellowjackets was played at the Boulder City Golf Club, a par-72 course, measuring 7,377 yards. UR's two-day total ends at 607, with the team not qualifying for the top-18 team cutline. Overall, 43 institutions participated in the event.
Graduate student
Brendan Frain led Rochester on day two and was the highest finishing individual on the team placing tied for 88th with a two day total of 150. Frain carded his second straight round of 3-over par, signing for a 75 on day two. His round featured six bogeys and three birdies, tying for the team high.
Junior
Gary Pan shot a 5-over, 77 on Wednesday, finishing up his event at 153, a +9 total. That score was good for 125th among the 221-player field. His final round at NCAA's was filled with 11 pars, including seven on the front nine, along one birdie and six bogeys.
Senior
Kerry Wang closed out his season with another score under 80, traversing the course in 79 shots, a 7-over par score. He bounced back from an opening bogey with a birdie on hole two and finished with two birdies on his scorecard during Wednesday's play. Wang finished his tournament in 147th place, with a 155 score.
UR's first round leader, first-year
Shibo Wang, ended his tournament by shooting 80 during the action on day two. His round was up-and-down, featuring a team-high tying three birdies, but got caught up in the conditions for the overall +8 round. His tournament closed at 151, tying for 99th place.
The Yellowjackets final golfer was senior
Tom Liu who finished off his season with an 83 on Wednesday. That, coupled with his 74 in the first round, brought the seniors total to 157, ranking tied for 156th in the field.
The team leaders after 36 holes in the event are Redlands, Kenyon and Methodist, all of whom are 10-under par as a team or better. Redlands sits first with a 563 score through two rounds, two shots ahead of Kenyon (565) and three clear of first round leader Methodist (566).
On the individual leaderboard, Oglethorpe's Michael O'Sullivan holds a one-stroke advantage, with a two-day total of 136. A trio of golfers sit just one stroke behind.
