UR Wraps Up Regular Season with Dominant Senior Day Victory

The University of Rochester men's swimming & diving team finished its regular season on a high note, defeating the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles, 189-94, in the Senior Day meet on Saturday afternoon at the Speegle-Wilbraham Center. The tri-meet also featured the Monroe Community College Tribunes competing against UR and Brockport in an exhibition.
 
Rochester won 12 of 16 events, totaling 32 top-three results in their final meet before the 2024-25 University Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships, which will be held Feb. 12-15 in Atlanta, GA.
 
UR's 200-medley relays got the Yellowjackets started with a clean sweep of the podium, finishing first, second and third to kick off the tri-meet. Max McClung, Brian Wong, Eli Muldoon and Michael Scholz combined for a 1:37.30 time to take first, Connor Kann, Jack Zapp, Ben Friedberg and Jeremy Mah took second with their 1:39.03 time, while UR's 'C' relay of Noah Falkenhagen, Max Gjevre, Chad Buccella and Ian Curd finished third, touching the wall in 1:43.88.
 
McClung was the 'Jackets' lone triple-winner of the afternoon, while Kann, Scholz and Wong each tallied multiple victories. McClung also won both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke, topping the 100-yard backstroke with his 52.99-second time, while taking the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:58.41.
 
Venden Berge also joined McClung in the top-three finishers of the 100-yard backstroke, placing second (56.04), while also taking second in the 200-yard freestyle relay to wrap up the meet alongside McClung, Nate Attwell and Demo Hong with a time of 1:28.59.
 
Kann, Scholz and Wong were each double-winners for Rochester, as Kann placed first in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM, Scholz added his second win in the 50-yard freestyle, and Wong won the 100-yard breaststroke, in addition to his opening relay.
 
In the 100-yard freestyle, Kann led a pair of Yellowjackets on the podium, finishing first with a time of 47.97, while Falkenhagen took second (50.98), while in the 200-yard IM, the Yellowjackets had a clean sweep of the top-three spots, with Kann taking first (1:59.28), Scholz placing second (2:05.44) and David Kilway earning third (2:08.08).
 
Scholz led another trio of Yellowjackets in the top three of the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall first with a time of 22.04, while Demo Hong finished second (22.45) and Jeremy Mah took third (22.45).
 
Similarly in the 100-yard breaststroke, UR swimmers took all three top spots, with Wong clocking in with a 58.19-second time to take first, while Kann finished second (1:00.48) and Gjevre finished third (1:02.47).
 
Rochester's five other winners on the day came in the 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard freestyle relay and 500-yard freestyle.
 
Bryce Berkhof took home a win in the 200-yard freestyle, pacing a trio of Yellowjackets atop the podium with his 1:47.09 time. Attwell took second in the event, clocking in at 1:48.04, while Johnathan Wu finished third with a time of 1:51.07.
 
In another event in which the Yellowjackets earned all three top finishers, Jack Zapp finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:15.45, while Mah placed second (2:18.27) and Buccella took third (2:20.90).
 
Attwell then took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:03.49, while Hong earned a victory in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing just milliseconds ahead of Muldoon in second place with a 53.41-second time, while Muldoon touched the wall in 53.43 seconds.
 
Rochester earned its final event win of the day in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where Friedberg, Mah, Wu and Falkenhagen took the top spot with a time of 1:28.51.
 
Elsewhere on the day, Luke Mario was Rochester's top finisher in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing third (2:19.86), while Max Wozinski and Brendan Habert each took second in one of the diving events.
 
In the one-meter dive, Habert scored UR's top spot, scoring 260.15 points to finish in second place, while Wozinski and Habert finished second and third in the three-meter, respectively, with scores of 230.85 and 207.70.
 
Additionally, Habert notched his first NCAA Regional qualifying score of the season in exhibition action, scoring 431.00 points across 11 dives.
 
Rochester next will have a couple of weeks to prepare for the 2024-25 UAA Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Emory University in Atlanta, GA, beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 10:00 a.m.
