Five Multi-Winners Lead to Rochester Win Over Cortland

CORTLAND, NY – The University of Rochester men's swimming and diving team picked up its first win of the 2025-26 campaign on Saturday, defeating host SUNY Cortland 184.5-112.5 at Harriet Holsten Pool.
 
The Yellowjackets claimed 12 event wins overall and five individuals earned multiple wins on the day. Max McClung and Ben Friedberg were triple-winners, while Nate Attwell, Sebastian Gans and Michael Scholz picked up two wins each.
 
Overall, Rochester compiled 28 top-3 finishes on the day.
 
McClung set a new Cortland pool record in the 100 butterfly, one of four wins on the day for the senior. His time in that event was :51.29, while he also touched first in the 200 butterfly in 1:58.19 and on URochester's 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
 
Friedberg won on both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay and completed his day with a win in the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 21.87 seconds.
 
Both Rochester relays were first to the wall, bookending the meet as the first and last events. The 200 medley relay team of McClung, Max Gjevre, Demo Hong and Friedberg earned a time of 1:37.49, while Gans, Scholz, McClung and Friedberg made up the 200 freestyle relay squad that posted a time of 1:27.86. Both UR 'B' relays ended in third place.
 
Attwell earned two individual wins, touching the wall in 1:47.85 in the 200 freestyle and 4:58.97 in the 500 freestyle. Two 'Jacket teammates ended second in those events, as Connor Kann was second in the 200 distance (1:49.55) and Tyler Yeung was runner-up in the longer 500-yard race (5:01.23).
 
Matthew Spence and Scholz were also winners in freestyle races for Rochester. Spence won the 1000 free in 10:06.25, while Scholz touched in 48.31 seconds to win his event.
 
Gans earned his individual event win during the 100 backstroke (:54.67) and was runner-up in the 100 free, clocking in at :49.67. Ryan Bowering, who won the 200 backstroke in 2:02.16, also had another top-2 result in the 100-yard back, finishing behind Gans with his time of :56.95. Bowering added another second place result late in the meet, touching in 2:05.07 in the 200 individual medley.
 
On the diving boards, Rochester accumulated four top-3 results. Brendan Habert won the 3-meter competition with a score of 259.65 points, while teammate Max Wozinski was runner-up with a score of 226.10 points. On the 1-meter board, Habert finished second (244.25 points), while Wozinski ended third (233.45 points).
 
Gjevre finished second in two individual events, in addition to his relay win. The senior posted times of 1:02.51 and 2:17.84 in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, respectively.
 
Other swimmers earning top-3's on the day were Yeung in the 1000 freestyle (10:18.77), Patrick Li in the 200 butterfly (2:05.30), Hong in the 100 butterfly (:53.85) and Kann in the 200 IM (2:05.16).
 
After a week off, the Yellowjackets return to the pool on November 8, swimming at Fredonia in a tri-meet with the host Blue Devils and Alfred University.
