The University of Rochester men's swimming and diving team dropped a closely-contested dual meet against the Grove City College Wolverines by the final score of 141-121, on Saturday afternoon inside the Speegle-Wilbraham Center.
Max McClung and
Matthew Spence led the 'Jackets, each notching a pair of individual wins, while URochester overall won six events and tallied 22 top-three finishes against Grove City.
McClung won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke, finishing first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.18 seconds, while touching the wall in 1:56.04 in the 200 backstroke to take the win. The senior also added a second-place result in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 49.81 seconds.
Sebastian Gans joined McClung in the top three of both backstroke events, finishing third in both with times of 59.97 seconds in the 100 backstroke and 2:00.83 in the 200 backstroke.
Spence recorded his two wins in the longest events of the day, the 500 and 1,650-yard freestyle. Spence began his day with a first-place time of 16:59.79 in the 1,650 freestyle, with
Tyler Yeung taking second with a time of 17:17.42.
Spence and Yeung then went one-two again in the 500 freestyle, with Spence touching the wall first in 4:56.61, while Yeung finished in second place with a 5:00.33 time, and
Ryan Bowering took third place with a time of 5:05.33.
The Yellowjackets' two other wins came in the 200-yard butterfly, where
Patrick Li topped the podium with a 2:00.64 time, and in the 50-yard freestyle, where
Ben Friedberg recorded a new personal-best time of 20.97 seconds to finish first.
Friedberg was also Rochester's top finisher in the 100-yard freestyle, placing second (48.87), with
Nate Attwell right behind him in third (48.98). Attwell added another top-three result in the 200-yard freestyle, pacing a trio of Yellowjackets in the top three with Attwell in second (1:46.86) and
Venden Berge in third place (1:48.78).
Max Gjevre led Rochester in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, tallying a pair of third-place finishes. Gjevre touched the wall in 1:00.90 in the 100 breaststroke, and 2:18.47 in the 200 breaststroke.
In the final individual event of the dual, Bowering took UR's top spot with a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:03.05.
URochester opened and closed the day with second and third-place finishes in the relay events. In the 200-yard medley relays, UR's 'A' relay of Gans, Gjevre,
Demo Hong and Friedberg took second with a 1:38.66 time, while Berge,
Jayden Proctor, Li and Attwell placed third with a time of 1:41.32.
Then, to wrap up the meet, McClung, Hong, Gans and Friedberg combined for a second-place time of 1:26.83 in the 200-yard freestyle relay, while the 'Jackets' 'B' relay of
Tommy Zeliph,
Brandon Weaver, Berge and Attwell finished third with a time of 1:30.79.
With the loss, the Yellowjackets drop to 3-3 in dual-meet competition, while Grove City moves to 4-3 on the year.
Rochester will be back in action on Thursday, Dec. 4, when they head to Ithaca, NY for the three-day Bomber Invitational, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
