ITHACA, NY – Senior
Max McClung set two new school records, hit an NCAA Division III 'B' cut and earned two event wins, highlighting the University of Rochester men's swimming and diving efforts on day two at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational at the Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium.
McClung broke his own school record by over half a second in the 100-yardbutterfly, swimming a finals time of 48.38 seconds to take the win and established the current #9 time in NCAA Division III. Additionally, McClung touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke, racing to a time of 49.39 seconds, trimming nearly another half second off his own prior school record set last February at the UAA Championships.
Rochester's men rank second among the six teams at the meet after two days of action, scoring 981 total points through the 14 men's events contested. Host Ithaca holds the team lead with 1,903 points, while Alfred University sits third at 752 points.
In addition to McClung's wins, the 'Jackets piled up 11 other top-8 results on the day and had 20 total individuals or relays score points.
Graduate student
Ryan Bowering placed third in the 400 individual medley in 4:09.86, while teammate
Brendan Habert matched him with a third place finish on the 1-meter diving board, scoring 405.20 points. In those events, UR had other top-5 scorers in
Matthew Spence (5th, 4:10.81) and
Max Wozinski (4th, 366.15), coming in the 400 IM and diving event, respectively.
To close the morning session, URochester's 800 freestyle relay team of Spence,
Connor Kann,
Nate Attwell and McClung ended in third place, posting a time of 7:07.45.
McClung broke two school records and had an NCAA B cut.
In the evening finals, both Yellowjacket relay entries in the 200 medley finished among the top-6.
Sebastian Gans,
Max Gjevre,
Ben Friedberg and Attwell were fifth in 1:36.24, while
Venden Berge,
Jayden Proctor,
Patrick Li and
Brandon Weaver were sixth, clocking in at 1:38.70.
During the 200 freestyle, Rochester had five individuals qualify for the finals, with Attwell leading the group by competing in the A final. The junior was fifth overall in 1:44.39, while his four other teammates all swam in the B final. Kann wound up ninth (1:44.73), Berge was tenth (1:46.26), Weaver finished 15th (1:47.22) and
Tyler Yeung was 16th (1:47.77).
URochester also had four finalists in the 100 butterfly, led by McClung's win. Friedberg was sixth in 52.24 seconds, swimming in the A final.
Jayden Proctor was first to the wall in the B final in 52.05 seconds, while Li ended 15th with a time of 53.66 seconds.
Proctor also was first to the wall in the C final during the 100 breaststroke (1:02.17), while Gjevre made the A final and ended in fifth overall, clocking in with a 58.30-second time.
Gans was Rochester's final scorer on the day, ranking seventh in the 100 backstroke A final in 52.53 seconds.
The third and final day of the competition is on Saturday, with the morning session starting at 9 am, with sessions later in the day taking place at 1 pm and 6 pm.
