ATLANTA – The University of Rochester swimming and diving team saw success on the opening day of the 2025 University Athletic Association Championships, setting a new record in the men's 800 freestyle relay.
Just three events were contested on Wednesday, the men's 1-meter diving competition and both the men's and women's 800 meter relay finals.
Rochester's new record setting group was junior
Max McClung, first-year
Connor Kann, sophomore
Michael Scholz and senior
Bryce Berkhof. The team swam to seventh place in the event and clocked in with a time of 6:48.58, scoring 46 points towards the team total for the week.
The time smashed the previous Rochester record of 6:52.41 set at last year's conference championships by McClung,
Venden Berge, Scholz and Berkhof.
In the 'B' final of the men's event, the team of
Jack Zapp,
Jeremy Mah,
Nate Attwell and
Noah Falkenhagen touched the wall in 7:00.33, ranking 15th in the field.
During the women's 800 freestyle relay, the Yellowjacket quartet of
Amelia Hardimann,
Adele Hellstrom,
Morgan Edstrom and
Leah Tang finished in 7:48.31, ending just over a second shy of the UR record, ranking fifth all-time in team history. That time placed the UR women seventh in the top final.
The 'B' group of
Izzy Stevenson,
Simone Lin,
Katelyn Packer and
Ariana Pasquella ranked 15th with its time of 7:57.49.
During the afternoon session in the diving well, UR's
Max Wozinski and
Brendan Habert finished in 10th and 13th place, respectively in the 1-meter prelims. Wozinski finished with a score of 376.95 points, while Habert scored 347.45 points across the 11-dive set list.
Wozinski's score was a new personal-best, and featured two scoring dives over 40 points. His best scoring dive was the forward two and a half somersault tuck which netted 46.80 points after receiving three 6.50 scores from the judges. Later in his list, Wozinski added 40.60 points on his inward two somersault tuck.
For Habert, his best dive was the forward two and a half somersault pike which scored 44.20 points, fifth best among the 14 divers in the event. Habert narrowly missed the 40-point total on his back two somersault tuck, with that dive scoring 39.60 points.
Day two's events begin with preliminaries in the morning session starting at 10 am, with 3-meter women's diving also taking place mid-day. During the evening finals starting at 5:30 pm, champions will be crowned in six more events.
