ATLANTA, GA – For the second time in a span of less than 12 hours, University of Rochester men's swimming and diving junior Max McClung broke his own 200-yard backstroke school record, first in the prelims, and then again in the finals, on final day of the 2025 University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Emory University at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center.

McClung first broke the 200-yard backstroke record, previously set back at the Bomber Invitational in December 2024, in the prelims, shaving off nearly one-and-a-half seconds off his previous high. Then in Saturday evening's finals, McClung broke the record again, dropping his time 0.11 seconds further.

The junior touched the wall in 1:48.07 seconds in the prelims to earn a spot in the evening's 'A' final and notch an NCAA 'B' cut time, his first of the season.

Then in finals, McClung posted the Yellowjackets' best individual finish at UAAs since 2019-20 when Jose Corredor Alvarez placed fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing sixth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:47.96, another NCAA 'B' cut time.

The 200-yard backstroke was one of three records, along with the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke, McClung broke individually at this weekend's championships, in addition to three relay records the junior combined to break, the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.

McClung also joined the Yellowjackets' 400-yard freestyle relay team to wrap up the night, combining with Nate Attwell, Connor Kann and Michael Scholz to place seventh, clocking in at 3:07.30, while the 'Jackets' 'B' relay of Bryce Berkhof, Ben Friedberg, Venden Berge and Jeremy Mah finished 15th overall with a time of 3:11.29.

Berkhof also placed in the 1,650-yard freestyle to score for the Yellowjackets, with the 'B' and 'C' heats taking place Saturday morning. Berkhof finished 17th in the 'B' heat, swimming the fifth-fastest time in program history at 16:26.92.

Elsewhere on the day, Connor Kann (33rd, 47.12) and Michael Scholz (35th, 47.45) swam Rochester's top times in the 100-yard freestyle prelims, while Brian Wong claimed the second alternate spot in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Wong finished 26th in the event, clocking in at 2:07.59, while Jack Zapp finished one spot behind him in 27th place at 2:08.01, and Max Gjevre rounded out three Yellowjackets in the top 30 with a 30th-place finish and 2:12.44 time.

In the final prelim event of the morning, the 200-yard butterfly, Luke Mario was UR's top finisher, touching the wall in 2:11.59 to finish 28th.

As a team, Rochester finished the 2025 UAA Championships with 495 points in seventh place, while host Emory took home the team title with 1,682 points, with NYU (1586.5 points) and Chicago (1,448 points) rounding out the top-three finishers.
