PITTSFORD, NY – The University of Rochester men's track and field team got in its final tune-up before the upcoming championship season, competing at the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Polisseni Track & Field Complex.
On the day, Rochester had eight top-3 finishes and four individuals secured five qualifying marks for the All-Atlantic Regional Championships later this spring.
The lone event winner on the day was senior
Sean Hendricks in the 800 meters. Hendricks' time was 1:53.93, a regional qualifier. He led three 'Jackets in the top-10, with
Skye Crocker ending seventh and
Andy Freeman placing tenth. Crocker crossed the stripe in 1:56.22, while Freeman hit a personal-best, earning a 1:58.02 time.
Senior
Jordan Johnson and sophomore
Armaan Butler both eclipsed the regional standard in the hammer throw, securing top-10 finishes. Johnson was runner-up with a toss of 55.23 meters, while Butler ended ninth at 49.69 meters.
Johnson added another runner-up and AARTFC mark in the discus, earning a distance of 45.03 meters. Teammate
Ethan Beer finished in third at 43.31 meters, while
Dylan Rykert also cracked the top-10, throwing the discus 38.97 meters. Beer added a top-10 result in the shot put with a 13.42 meter toss.
Cody Reeth was the final regional qualifier, ending third in the pole vault with a 4.50 meter clearance.
Reeth's third place result was one of five on the day for Rochester. Besides Reeth and Beer in the discus,
Aadit Jain,
Zajans Crapo and
Liam Sakakeeny also ended in that position in their events.
Jain finished third in the high jump with a 1.91 meter height, while Crapo also competed in the field, tossing the javelin 48.60 meters to reach that finishing position. Sakakeeny ran to third in the 1500 meters, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:00.83. Also in the 1500 meters, senior
Vishal Yalamanchili finished tenth in a personal-best time of 4:03.03.
Senior
Sam Lorenzetti had a strong day in both the horizontal jumps, finishing fourth in the triple jump (13.42 meters) and sixth in the long jump (6.62 meters). Additionally, sophomore
Kyle Kelsey ended sixth in the triple jump with a PR leap of 13.20 meters.
Sophomore
Elijah VanHoover was UR's top finisher in both hurdles events on the track, running sixth in both the 110 meter and 400 meter distances. In the 110 meters, he ran 16.66 seconds and later finished the 400 meter distance in 57.81 seconds, shaving over two seconds off his previous personal-best.
Also in the 400 meter hurdles, first-year
Owen Hatungimana finished eighth in a season-best time of 58.38 seconds.
Two other sprinters had top-10 results for the Yellowjackets on a cold and breezy April afternoon at Fisher. Will Stiska was seventh in the 100 meters, finishing in 11.12 seconds, while
Evan Bryant ran to a personal-best 50.18 second time in the 400 meters, ending ninth.
