Distance Runners Score for UR on Day One of AARTFC Meet

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The University of Rochester saw three distance runners score for the men's track and field team during day one of the competition at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Championships at Williams College's Lee Track on Wednesday.
 
Senior James Catania earned Rochester's best finish of the day, finishing as runner-up in the 5,000 meters, while first-year teammate Sam Cohen also ended on the podium, crossing the stripe in sixth place overall among the 19 runners. Catania's time was 14:39.59, while Cohen hit a season-best time of 14:53.79.
 
Later in the evening, senior Vishal Yalamanchili was Rochester's third scorer, ending in third place during the 10,000 meters. His time was 31:02.50, ending just five seconds behind the winner, with the top-4 being tightly packed throughout the whole 25-lap race.
 
Fellow senior Jordan Johnson earned a ninth place finish in the discus, posting a distance of 46.26 meters, with sophomore Ethan Beer ending at 43.58 meters, good for 14th in the field.
 
UR also had two entrants in the 100 meters, with P.J. London leading the way by placing 12th in the preliminaries in 10.81 seconds, establishing a new personal-best in his final time running the event. First-year William Stiska ended in 23rd place, crossing the stripe in 10.98 seconds.
 
In the other finals of the day, first-year Austin Lansey wound up 20th in the long jump with a distance of 6.43 meters, while senior Zajans Crapo placed 26th during the javelin with a toss of 47.23 meters.
 
Rochester also had three competitors in the decathlon, with senior Gabe Thyne pacing the UR squad through five events with 3,515 points, ranking second. Thyne capped day one with a strong performance in the 400 meters, finishing in a new PR of 48.22 seconds. The senior also was second in the 100 meters (11.15 seconds), third in the high jump (1.82 meters) and fourth in the shot put (10.49 meters).
 
UR's other decathletes were Ashton Tokarski and Jack Maness. Tokarski sits fifth after five events at 3,169 points, while Maness is 12th with a score of 2,973 points. Tokarski's top finish was in the long jump when he ended third at 6.45 meters, with the sophomore also placing seventh in the high jump, matching his PR of 1.76 meters.
 
Maness also tied his personal best in the high jump, clearing 1.70 meters, ranking tenth in the field, while he added a ninth place result in the 400 meters (53.75 seconds) to close day one.
 
In the team scoring through eight events, Rochester sits in eighth place among 30 teams that scored on the opening day. UR has 17 points, eight from Catania, six from Yalamanchili and three from Cohen.
 
The remainder of the 22 scoring events at the meet will conclude the competition on Thursday afternoon.
