GENEVA, OH – Competing in wet and rainy conditions for much of the day, the University of Rochester men's track & field team saw a pair of competitors kick off day one of the 2025 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at The SPIRE Institute.
Senior
Gabe Thyne got off to a slow start in the decathlon but finished strong and sits in 17th place out of 22 competitors with 3,097 points through the first five events of the decathlon. Thyne opened the day with a 19th-place result in the 100 meters, clocking in at 11.51 seconds, before finishing 20th in the long jump with a 5.73m leap and 22nd in the shot put with a 9.53m toss.
However, with the high jump forced indoors due to the weather, Thyne started to find his stride, placing 14th, successfully leaping over the 1.76m bar, before taking eighth in the 400 meters. The senior ran in the third and fastest heat and crossed the finish line in 51.02 seconds, fifth in the heat and eighth overall, scoring 768 points to move up to 17th ahead of the final day of the decathlon.
Thyne sits 691 points out of first place through the first five decathlon events, and just 87 points shy of 16th, the final Second-Team All-America spot in the competition.
Elsewhere on the day,
Jordan Johnson competed in his first of two events at the NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships, the javelin throw, competing in the event for just the fourth time this outdoor season.
Johnson's first throw came in at 50.24m, and the senior improved with each successive toss, hitting 50.35m with his second attempt before placing 21st with a final throw of 53.33m. The senior will be back in action on Saturday, May 24 for his second event, competing in the hammer throw at 1:45 p.m., in which he is seeded eighth.
Thyne will be back on the track to get day two of the 2025 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships started at The SPIRE Institute on Friday, May 23, kicking off the final five decathlon events with the 110-meter hurdles at 10:30 a.m.
