Golf Finishes Tied for 13th at Tiger Invitational

PINEHURST, NC – In a loaded field featuring 11 of the most recent Top-25 Coaches Poll and another five receiving votes, the 12th-ranked University of Rochester men's golf team finished tied for 13th at 32-over-par on Tuesday at Hampden-Sydney's Tiger Invitational at the Forest Creek Golf Club.
 
The Yellowjackets combined to shoot 17-over on the second day and third round of competition, as just four squads shot below par on what was a tough final round on the course. The third round featured an average score of 75.18, after the first two rounds' average scores were 74.80 and 74.36, respectively.
 
Sophomore Alvin Su led the Yellowjackets over the final round, shooting an even par to finish at plus-four for the tournament, tied for 35th overall. Su turned in a pair of birdies in his final round, birdieing the par-five 18th hole, and then the par-four sixth hole, shooting an even-par, 36, on both the front and back nine.
 
Both junior Arjun Aujla and sophomore Galen Fowles ended the final round at five-over-par, shooting a 77 on the par-72 course. Aujla led the Yellowjackets with a trio of birdies on the final day, with birdies on the par-three 2nd hole, par-four 6th hole and par-three 16th hole, shooting one-over on the front nine, and four-over on the back nine.
 
Overall, Aujla wrapped up the tournament at eight-over, finishing tied for 11th. Fowles shot three-over on the back nine and then two-over on the front nine to end the day at five-over-par, and 14-over for the three rounds, tied for 73rd in the 100-golfer field
 
First-year Anderson Palm was the Yellowjackets' fourth scoring golfer on the final day of competition, shooting a 79, a seven-over-par round to end the invitational at six-over, tied for 45th. Palm birdied his first hole of the day, the par-five, 549-yard 9th hole, and then birdied the par-three 4th hole as he came back around the front nine, finishing the back nine at four-over and the front nine at five-over-par.
 
Senior Josh Pethel rounded out URochester's lineup at the Tiger Invitational, finishing the final day of competition at nine-over-par and 28-over-par for the three rounds. Starting on the 11th hole, Pethel shot six-over on the back nine and three-over on the front nine, hitting par on four of his last five holes.
 
No. 9 Methodist led for nearly the entire tournament and walked away with a win as one of just two teams to finish under par. Methodist won the Tiger Invitational at 13-under, while No. 1 Huntington came in second at seven-under par, with No. 8 Sewanee and No. 2 Emory tied for third place at two-over-par.
 
Also in action at the Hampden-Sydney Invitational at Foxfire, first-year Henry Zong carded an eight-over round on day two to finish tied for 77th at 16-over-par, while Kim came in 108th, shooting 15-over on Tuesday and 30-over-par for the two-day tournament.
 
Zong shot three-over on the front nine and then six-over on the back nine, while Kim notched a birdie on the par-four, 10th hole, bouncing back for a 12-over first nine holes to shoot just three-over on the back nine.
 
Carnegie Mellon's Charlie Hubbard took the top spot at the Hampden-Sydney Invitational at Foxfire, finishing the two rounds at six-under.
 
The Yellowjackets next head to Jekyll Island, GA, for the three-day Jekyll Island Invitational at Pine Lakes Golf Course, beginning on Friday, March 20.
