Women’s Track & Field Kicks Off Outdoor Campaign at Spring Opener

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester women's track & field program hosted the Rochester Spring Opener for its first meet of the outdoor campaign and netted four first-place finishes and four All-Atlantic Region (AARTFC) qualifying marks on Sunday at Edwin Fauver Stadium and the GLC Throws Complex.
 
The Yellowjackets earn the top mark in all three contested throwing events: the discus, hammer throw and shot put. Madison Vargas won both the hammer throw and shot put, taking the top spot in the hammer throw with an AARTFC qualifying 47.76m toss, while Cassidy Romano placed eighth with a 31.72m throw.
 
In the shot put, Vargas finished first with an 11.86m toss, with Aimee Oszer right behind her in second place with an 11.73m throw. Grace McInerney joined the duo in the top 10 with an eighth-place finish and 9.03m shot put.
 
Oszer led Rochester in the discus, hitting the AARTFC qualifying mark with her first-place, 43.04m throw, as did Vargas, who earned a regional qualifying mark and took second with a throw of 42.54m. Romano rounded out Rochester's top-three finishers in the event, placing seventh at 30.62m.
 
URochester's final event win, and All-Atlantic Region qualifier came in the 5,000 meters, where Molly FitzGibbons crossed the finish line in 17:24.54, good for first-place and a regional qualifier.
 
Elsewhere in the field events, Kate Atkins paced the 'Jackets in the pole vault with a 2.76m height, finishing eighth. In the high jump, Rochester placed three in the top eight, with Lily Hubert taking second (1.44), Cassie Ward finishing fourth (1.44m) and Julia Largett placing sixth (1.34m).
 
Six Yellowjackets also finished in the top nine of the long jump, led by Ward, who took second with a 5.34m leap. Sadie Omilian finished right behind Ward in third, jumping 5.17m, while Anna Johnson placed fourth (5.06m), Ellerie Finger came in sixth (4.90m), Largett finished seventh (4.82m) and Raelen Green came in ninth (4.67m).
 
CC Leavitt got Rochester's day started on the track with the 1,500 meters, clocking in at 5:08.25, good for 12th.
 
In the 400 meters, Julie Durham took Rochester's top spot, fifth, with a time of 1:08.07. While in the 800 meters, Isabella Doty was the 'Jackets' top finisher with a time of 2:24.43, good for fourth.
 
Durham, Doty and Leavitt, along with Julia Lantner, then wrapped up Rochester's day on the track with the 4x400-meter relay, combining for a fourth-place time of 4:23.03.
 
The Yellowjackets will be back in action next Friday, April 3, with a split-squad weekend, competing at the two-day William & Mary Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, VA, and the SUNY Geneseo Early Season Invite in Geneseo, NY on Saturday, April 4.
