CLEVELAND – Rochester lost its opening match in the University Athletic Association men's tennis championships, 5-0, to top-seeded Emory University. The championships are being conducted at Case Western Reserve University.

The match was shortened when the championships were moved indoors due to weather conditions. With fewer courts available, matches are being played on a “to-decision” basis, rather than a “to-completion” basis.

Michael Burger lost, 6-3, 6-1, at number one singles to Michael Goodwin. Brian Bowman lost, 6-0, 6-1, to Yoji Masuoka at number two singles.

Goodwin and Masuoka defeated Bowman and Burger, 8-2, in first doubles. Emory won the second and third doubles events by 8-0 scores. At second doubles, hardy Ehlers and Oliver Lopp defeated Jason Maher and Michael Kornhauser. At third doubles, Lee Friedman and Mark Boren defeated Adam Crosby and Tyler Socash.
