PITTSBURGH, Pa - Rochester's men's tennis team defeated NYU, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon to finish in seventh place at the University Athletic Association championships.
Earlier on Saturday, the Yellojwackets lost to Case Western Reserve, 5-0, in the consolation round. Rochester's final dual match record for the season is 11-11.
The Yellowjackets won all three doubles matches, took #1, then #4 singles to clinch the victory. Four other singles matches were underway when #4 singles ended (Jeff Zink defeated Eugene Tsarevskiy, 4 and 0).
Brian Schmmer and Dan Barbash opened the event for Rochester by defeating Jason Sacher and P.J. Marranca, 8-1, at #2 doubles. Zink and Matt Volkov defeated Philip Rosenstein and Tsarevskiy, 8-3, at #3 doubles.
Brian Bowman and Austin Armstrong withstood a challenge at first doubles before winning, 9-7, over Alex Stoler and Matt Gross.
In singles, Bowman pushed the Yellowjackets into a 4-0 lead by defeating Sacher, 3 and 2, at #1. Zink's win followed.
The Case match was close in a number of the singles matches. Only #1 and #2 singles were completed. Armstrong won his opener at #3, 7-6 (7-0 on the tiebreak) and led, 3-2, in the second set when the match was halted.
On Friday, Rochester lost its opening match when third-ranked Emory University posted a 9-0 win.
Emory, which beat Rochester a year ago in the UAA quarterfinals, won the doubles matches by scores of 8-4 (at #1), 8-1 (at #2), and 8-0 (at #3). Bowman and Armstrong played at first doubles for Rochester. Barbash and Schmeer formed the #2 doubles team with Zink and Volkov playing at #3.
In singles play, the Eagles won each match in straight sets. Bowman lost to Dillon Pottish at #1 (0, 3), Schmeer to Chris Goodwin at #2 (0,0), Asrmstrong to Noah Simonson at #3 (1, 2), Zink to Colin Egan at #4 (2, 2), Alex Magill to Oliver Lopp at #5, and Volkov to David Caplan at #6 (3, 1).
