Men's Tennis Ends 8th at UAA Championships

WALTHAM, Mass - Host Brandeis outlasted Rochester, 5-3, in the second round of the University Athletic Association men's tennis championships and NYU posted a 7-0 win to claim seventh place.

The Yellowjackets finished with an overall record of 11-11. It was the second time in a week that Rochester and NYU hooked up on the tennis courts.

Rochester won all three doubles matches but Brandeis responded with five straight singles wins to claim a 5-3 victory.

With weather pushing action inside, matches were played to decision. The sixth singles match between Matt Volkov of Rochester and Adam Brown of Brandeis was halted. Brown won the first set. Volkov was ahead, 4-3, in the second set when the fifth Brandeis point was earned.

Boris Borovcanin and Brian Rice earned a hard-fought 9-8 (7-3) tiebreaker win over Nick White and Dave Yovanoff at first doubles. Volkov and Jeff Zink took an 8-6 win over Ezra Bernstein and Josh Jordan at second doubles. Rochester had opened the morning's action by winning, 8-5, at third doubles. Dan Barbash and John Lewis Etter got the win. Michael DeFeo and Steven Nieman took the loss for Brandeis.

The Judges took their first point at #4 singles with Jordan downing Rice, 6-0, 6-2. Nieman downed Barbash, 6-2, 6-2, at #5, and Bernstein toppled Zink, 6-3, 6-0, at #3 to even the team scoring.

White defeated Borovcanin, 6-3, 6-1, at #1 singles. Yovanoff clinched the match with a three-setter over Joel Allen at #2 (4-6, 6-4, 6-4).

Against NYU, Volkov and Zink lost, 8-3, to Raphael Namias and Alex Stoler at #2 doubles. Borovcanin and Rice lost, 8-4, to Connor Witty and Tim Wu at #1. Barbash and Etter were defeated, 8-3, at #3 by Matt Gross and Bowen Xu.

Rice lost to Daniel Penaranda, 6-2, 6-2, at #4 singles. Zink lost, 6-3, 6-3, to Wu at #3. Allen was defeated by Namias, 6-3, 6-1, at #2, and Witty downed Borovcanin, 6-4, 6-1, at #1.

The fifth and sixth singles matches were not completed. Volkov led Gross, 4-3, in the first set at #6. Barbash was a 7-5 winner in his first set against Xu. The NYU player evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-3 win in the second set.
