POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Vassar College claimed four straight-set victories in singles competition and rode that to a 9-0 victory over the University of Rochester in men's tennis on Sunday afternoon.
The Brewers, ranked No. 11 in the northeast in the last regional rankings, improved to 12-9. Rochester, ranked 18
th in the same poll, is 6-12.
Alex Magill took Ben Guzick to a first set tiebreaker in second singles. Guzick dominated the second set and wound up winning, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.
Matt Volkov and Wilson Platt needed to go to a supertiebreaker at fifth singles after each man won a set. Platt won the first set, 6-4. Volkov answered with a 7-6 win at #2. Platt won the tiebreaker, 10-6.
Brian Rice lost, 6-1, 6-0, at #1.
Julian Danko lost, 6-4, 6-3, at #3.
Joel Allen was decisioned by Nick Jasso at #4 (6-4, 6-4), and
Jonathan Lieb lost, 6-2, 6-2, at #6.
In doubles play, Magill and Danko battled skillfully at #2 before Don Freeman and Josh Kessler prevailed, 8-6. The Guzicks were 8-2 winners over Rice and Allen at first doubles. Volkov and
John Lewis Etter lost, 8-3, at #3 doubles.
