ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Second-ranked Emory University won all three doubles matches by big margins and won the six singles matches in straight sets to post a 9-0 victory over the University of Rochester in the University Athletic Association men's tennis championships on Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles are the top seed in the UAA draw. They raised their record to 18-0. Rochester entered the tournament as the eighth seed. The Yellowjackets are 6-13.
On Friday, Rochester will play the University of Chicago in the consolation round at 9 am. Emory will play in the semifinals against Case Western Reserve. Case defeated Chicago, 6-3.
The other consolation bracket match pitts NYU against Brandeis. Carnegie Mellon is playing Washington for a spot in the championship match. The fifth- and seventh-place matches will be staged at 5 pm on Friday.
Boris Borovcanin and
Brian Rice lost, 8-3, at #1 doubles to Chris Goodwin and Will Humphreys.
Julian Danko and
Alex Magill paired at second doubles (lost, 8-1) while
John Lewis Etter and
Matt Volkov formed the third doubles unit for Rochester (lost, 8-1).
In singles play,
Alex Magill mustered the most success in terms of points won, He scored two in the first set and three in the second set against Brian Kowalski.
Rochester's morning meeting against Chicago will be the first of two Friday UR-UC meetings. The Yellowjacket women, seeded sixth in the field, take on third-seeded Chicago at 1:30 pm in the quarterfinal round.
