11/16/2013 11:33:00 PM

John Ingham and Nick Wertman scored second half goals and Brandt Rentel posted a shutout as Oberlin College defeated SUNY Oneonta, 2-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Playoffs at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Oberlin's victory puts the Yeomen into the second round of the tournament against the University of Rochester. The Yellowjackets, ranked #10 nationally, defeated SUNYIT, 2-0, in the first game of this doubleheader. The Yeomen improved to 14-3-4 with the victory. This is their initial appearance in the NCAA Division III men's soccer playoffs. Oneonta finished 11-5-4.

Ingham's goal came from the penalty spot . Oberlin came downfield against the run of play and earned a corner kick. The ball was lifted into the center of the goalmouth where Sam Winward tried a header for the top left corner. It was beyond the reach of Oneotna goalkeeper Daniel DeBottis. Mitchell Cain blocked the ball with his hands to keep it out of the goal. He was red-carded and the Yeomen awarded a penalty kick. Ingham scored at 65:14 to put Oberlin ahead.

With less than three minutes to play, another counterattack produced the second goal. Ari Schwartz got the ball on the right wing, cut into the box, and sent a lateral pass through the goalmouth which was directed into the lower left side by Nick Wertman.

Oneonta attacked furiously for much of the contest. The Red Dragons held a 27-8 advantage in shots, 13-2 in the first 45 minutes. Rentel was up to the task. He posted 13 saves. Eleven minutes into the match, he had to make a terrific diving save to deny Oneonta's Dylan Williams.

There was little difference early in the second half. Waves of Oneonta players swept towards goal. Cain blooped one over the bar three minutes in. With less than 33 minutes left in the match, Justin Rivera tried a shot for the top left corner from right wing. The ball struck the inside of the left post and caromed to Rentel who punched it clear. Cain was in the middle again a minute later. His shot from just outside the area was punched over the bar by Rentel.

"This result kind of sums up our season," said Oneonta head coach Ian Byrne. "We can't put the ball in the net in a big game. It's hard to believe we lost."
