Box Score

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – The University of Rochester men's tennis team will play for 7th place at the UAA Championships after falling by a 7-2 score to #23 Brandeis University in the consolation round on Friday afternoon at Sanlando Park.

The Judges improve to 9-8 on the season and will face off with Case Western Reserve for 5th place while the Yellowjackets (9-9) will square off against NYU for 7th on Saturday morning.  Rochester and NYU played last Saturday with UR emerging with a 6-3 victory over the Violets.

On Friday, Brandeis was able to sweep all three doubles points to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.  At #1, Michael Arguello and Ryan Bunis won 8-4 over UR's Masaru Fujimaki and Aaron Mevorach.  Rochester's Ben Shapiro and Andrew Nunno fell 8-3 at #2 to Danny Lubarsky and Brian Granoff while Brandeis' third doubles team of Jeff Cherkin and Tyler Ng also won 8-3 over the Yellowjacket combo of Ian Baranowski and Kevin Hunt.

Rochester would capture its only two points of the day, rallying from a set down at #5 and #6 singles, getting points from sophomores Nunno (#6) and Mevorach (#5).  Nunno would win after dropping a first set tiebreak 6-7 (1), 6-4, 10-4 over Cherkin while Mevorach would win after losing the first, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 over Jordan Brodie.

The rest of the matches would fall in Brandeis' favor with three coming in straight sets.  At #1, Fujimaki pressed Bunis to three sets after winning the first, but ultimately fell 6-4, 1-6, 7-10.  Shapiro fell victim to Granoff at #2 6-4, 6-3 while his senior classmate Baranowski dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Arguello at #3.  Both Bunis and Granoff are ranked in the top-25 in the northeast region in the latest ITA rankings.  Rounding out the match was junior Sam Leeman against Ng, with Ng coming away with a tight 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Earlier this season, Rochester traveled to Brandeis for a regular season contest and in that one the Judges would win by the same 7-2 score.
