GENEVA, NY – University of Rochester senior
Masaru Fujimaki led the men's tennis contingent at this weekends ITA Regional Championships at Hobart College, reaching the quarterfinals in singles.
Overall, Fujimaki posted three wins, all in straight sets to reach the fourth round. He opened with two victories on Friday, winning 6-3, 6-2 over Joshua Piatos of NYU before topping Brennan Bull of RIT 6-1, 6-4. On Saturday in the round of 16, Fujimaki posted a 6-3, 7-5 win over Suraj Mahtani of Skidmore. The Yellowjacket senior was then upended by NYU's Vishal Walia 6-0, 2-6, 7-5 to bow out of the competition.
Also in singles, UR's
Yifan Shen won both his matches on Friday to reach the third round. Shen won over Ioannis Binopoulos of Union 7-6 (1), 6-3 and then was victorious over Rahul Das of NYU 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 to advance to Saturday's play. In the round of 16, he was upended by Matthew Michibata of TCNJ in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Three other Yellowjackets and two doubles teams also competed at ITA's but fell in the opening round of play.
Tanmay Thakkar lost to Vassar's David Gandham 7-5, 4-6, 10-1.
Uriah Miller dropped a match by a 6-1, 6-1 score to Keegan Morris of Stevens while Isaiah Volk was forced to retire in his opening round against Tim Derby of Hamilton tied at one set apiece.
In doubles, Volk and Fujimaki lost 8-5 to Skidmore's Mahtani and Noah Williamson. Teammates
Pasquale Procaccino and
Sahaj Somani battled tough but ultimately fell 9-7 to Max Zimmerman and Daniel Tsyvin of Hamilton.
