CANTON, NY – The University of Rochester men's tennis team is off to another good start in the SLU Fall Classic at St. Lawrence University.
 
After the first day of competition, three individuals are through to the semifinal round of the event: Isaiah Volk and Masaru Fujimaki in the A Flight, Yifan Shen in the B Flight.
 
Volk opened with an 8-6 win over an Ithaca opponent while Fujimaki defeated a Hamilton player, 8-6.  Tanmay Thakkar lost in round one to an Ithaca player, 8-6.
 
Volk and Fujimaki won against Hobart players in the quarterfinals – Volk in a 9-8 (4-0) tiebreaker, Fujimaki by an 8-5 score. If they both win their semifinal matches, they will play each other for the A Flight title.
 
In B Flight, Peter Huang won, 8-2, vs. Hamilton, when lost, 8-2, to Ithaca. Shen started with an 8-0 win over RIT and followed that with an 8-1 victory over Ithaca.
 
Uriah Miller and Pasquale Procaccino lost in the first round of the C Flight Singles; Miller by an 8-6 score (vs. Ithaca), Procaccino, 8-3, to St. Lawrence. Adrian Zhang beat RIT, 8-4, in D Flight, then lost to Hobart, 8-3.
 
Among the various consolation competitions, Thakkar lost, 8-4, to Union in A, Miller won, 8-6, vs. Union in C Flight, and Proccaccino won, 8-2, vs. RIT. They will play in opposite portions of the C Consolation semifinals.
 
Fujimaki and Volk paired in doubles to reach the A Flight semifinals. They won, 8-3, vs. Union, then 9-7, against RIT. Procaccino and Huang were 8-5 winners against Ithaca in the first round but lost, 8-2, to Hobart in the quarters. Shen and Miller lost on a tiebreaker, 9-8 (4-0) to St. Lawrence in round one.
 
Zhang and Miller won, 8-6, vs. Hamilton in B Doubles. Shen and Thakkar won in the quarters of the A Doubles Consolations, 8-3, over Hobart.
