Doubles Team Advances Past Day 1 of ITA's

Day 1 Results

GENEVA, NY – One doubles team is still alive for the University of Rochester men's tennis team after day one of competition at the ITA Regional Championships on Friday afternoon at Hobart College.
 
The pairing of Sahaj Somani and Pasquale Procaccino reached the quarterfinals of the bracket after a big upset in the first round and then an impressive performance in round two.
 
In the opening round, Somani and Procaccino had a tough draw against the #4 seeded team of Matthew Michibata and Nick Matkiwsky of TCNJ.  The Rochester duo held strong against their opponents and emerged with an 8-6 victory.
 
Somani and Procaccino then moved onto the quarterfinals with an 8-3 victory over Union's Cameron Klepper and Nick Weitzman in round two.  In the quarters, UR's doubles team takes on Dylan Payne and Zach Ebenfeld of RPI.
 
In singles play, UR had five individuals in the main draw, with two advancing past the first round.  Senior Yifan Shen won in his opening defeating Rahul Das of NYU 7-6, 6-3.  Teammate Peter Huang also was a first round winner, upending Ithaca's Liam Spiegel 6-3, 7-5.
 
Both dropped their second round matchups.  Huang fell to Harry Lyu of host Hobart 6-0, 6-3, while Shen took his opponent to three sets, but ultimately was edged by Hamilton's Rob Dotterer 3-6, 6-0, 11-9.
 
The other three competing in the singles main draw were Kai Yuminaga, Tanmay Thakkar and Somani.  Yuminaga was defeated by RPI's Andrew Imrie, Somani fell to Hobart's Walker Anderson and JT Wynne defeated Thakkar.
 
In doubles, the other UR combo, consisting on Thakkar and Shen were defeated by an 8-6 score, falling to Lyu and Kaan Ayman of Hobart.
