'Jackets Claim Three Flight Titles At SLU Classic

CANTON, NY – The University of Rochester men's tennis team captured three flight titles at the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic to open the season on Sunday afternoon.
 
Senior Tanmay Thakkar won the B flight singles title while first year teammate Kai Yuminaga captured the C flight singles competition.  In doubles, the pair of Sahaj Somani and Pasquale Procaccino earned the B flight crown.  Senior Matt Resnikoff reached the D singled final but lost to his opponent.
 
The doubles team needed to defeat two teams from Hobart to earn their victory.  In the semifinals Somani and Procaccino won 8-6 over Joe Mallon and Thomas Speers.  Then in the championship, UR's team won 8-4 over Colin Molloy and Thomas Shung.

Thakkar earned his victory in the semifinals over Jeremy Atwater of Hobart.  Atwater won the opening set 7-6 in a tiebreak, but Thakkar blanked him in the second set 6-0 and won the tiebreaker 11-9 to move on.  In the finals, he posted a straight set, 6-3, 6-3 win over Union's Austin Egna.
 
Yuminaga had two straight set wins on Sunday.  In the semifinals, he defeated Molloy from Hobart 7-6, 6-4.  To win the crown, he won again over another Statesmen player, Jack Ledford, by a 6-1, 6-3 score.
 
Resnikoff posted a 6-1, 6-2 win in his first match Sunday over Cameron Pankau of host SLU.  In the finals though, the UR senior lost to Hobart's Mallon 6-4, 7-5.
 
A slew of other Rochester players eliminated from play on Saturday participated in additional matches in both singles and doubles play.  UR's singles players went 5-0 in these matches with Yifan Shen posting two wins.  In doubles, Rochester added two additional wins to its weekend tally.
