Krish Vennam of the Rochester men's tennis team reached the third round of the singles bracket at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships on Friday afternoon at Hobart College.
Vennam was one of three Yellowjackets in action at the ITA tournament, but is the only one still alive after day one. Teammates
Pasquale Procaccino and
Kai Yuminaga both were victorious in their singles first round matches, but lost to seeded players in round two.
In doubles, Rochester had one entry, with Vennam and Procaccino taking the court together. The duo were 8-2 winners in the opening round over a team from Oneonta State. In the second round, Rochester was matched up with the #2 seeds, Brendan Jimenez and Zach Portnoy of Skidmore. UR's doubles pair fought hard, but ultimately fell by an 8-4 score.
Vennam, one of the 5/8 seeds of the singles bracket, breezed through his two wins in straight sets, dropping only a total of five games throughout. In the opening round, he won 6-3, 6-0 over Joe Reiner of Hamilton College. In round two, Vennam was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Thomas Shung of host Hobart College.
His quarterfinal opponent will be Abraham Yohannes of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
In his round one, Procaccino blanked Kyle Gorman of St. John Fisher 6-0, 6-0. The next round, 3/4 seeded Emilio Van Cottem earned a straight set win 6-0, 6-3 over the Yellowjacket senior.
Yuminaga also had success in round one, albeit not quite as easily as his two teammates. He defeated Ithaca's Eric Dubilirer 6-4, 6-4. Round two saw a similar fate to Procaccino, falling 6-3, 6-0 to 9/16 seeded Connor Griff of Hamilton.
