Day 1 Results
CANTON, NY – The University of Rochester men's tennis team kicked off its 2021-22 season on Saturday by competing on day one of the St. Lawrence Fall Classic.
The Yellowjackets saw the most success in the A singles bracket, going a combined 5-1 across six matches from the three competitors in that draw.
Both
Kai Yuminaga and
Krish Vennam will play in Sunday's semifinals against one another after going 2-0 in the main draw action. Meanwhile,
Pasquale Procaccino was defeated in his opening match, but bounced back with a consolation match win later in the day.
Yuminaga defeated RIT's Brennan Bull 8-5 and followed that up with an 8-5 win over Kaan Ayman of Hobart in the quarterfinals. Vennam earned a win in the opening round over Union's Giannos Binopoulous 8-1. In the next round, he impressed again, posting an 8-2 win over Nico Vega from Ithaca.
Proccacino lost in the opening round to Harry Lyu of Hobart 8-6, but rebounded later with a strong 8-1 win in the consolation quarters against RIT's Ethan Martin.
The only other Yellowjacket to post a victory on day one of the competition was
Mark Zolotukhin in the consolation round of the B singles draw. After falling 8-3 in the main draw, Zolotukhin was an 8-4 winner over Bailey McAtee of Union in the consolation quarters.
Rochester also had three doubles entries spread out across the two main draws, but unfortunately all three teams were defeated in their opening round matches. Zolotukhin and Proccaino lost to a pair from Hamilton 8-2 while Yuminaga and Vennam were upended 8-6 by a team from Hobart in the A bracket.
