HERSHEY, PA – The University of Rochester golf team, fresh into the top-25 in Division III, is locked in a tight battle near the top of the standings after day one of the Hershey Cup at Hershey Country Club.
The Yellowjackets serve as host of the annual event which features several top teams from across the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions in Division III men's golf. Overall, this weekend field features the #5, #6, #18, #19 and #24 teams in the latest top-25 poll, and two other teams who are just on the outside, in the receiving votes category.
Rochester shot an opening round score of 298 (+18) on Sunday, sitting third among the 17 teams in the field. 5th-ranked Wittenberg leads the event with a score of 294, while NYU is second just two strokes behind. UR's other Liberty League foe RPI is fourth at 300 and Gettysburg opened with a 301 to round out the top-5.
Leading the way for Rochester were senior
Lewis Raboy and junior
Brendan Frain who both shot rounds of 3-over par, 73 on the par-70, 6,230 yard layout at Hershey CC East. Frain's card featured a total of 13 pars and two birdies. Raboy had five bogeys, two birdies and 11 pars in his opening round, with both birdies coming on back-to-back holes on #13 and #14.
The pair is tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard, four strokes behind the first round leader, Matthew Mattioli of Wittenberg, who shot a 1-under, 69 on Sunday.
Sophomore
Tom Liu ranks tied for 15th after 18 holes in the event, shooting a score of 5-over, 75 on Sunday. He was 1-under through six holes and finished his opening nine at 1-over.
Kerry Wang was UR's final scorer with an opening round 77 (+7) to sit in a tie for 25th place. His best stretch came on holes 12 through 16, where he notched five straight pars in the opening round.
Also competing for Rochester, was first-year
Gary Pan who opened with a 9-over, 79, ranking as the 39th best individual in the 89-player field on Sunday. His round was dropped towards the team score but can be counted during Monday's second round.
Rochester's
Will Meinhardt also is playing this weekend as one of five individuals. He shot an opening round 83 and is tied for 62nd.
The Yellowjackets top five begin round two tee times at 10:09 on Monday. UR is paired with the other top teams, NYU and Wittenberg, in the final team pairings.
