PITTSFORD, NY – The University of Rochester men's track and field team saw its season get off to a smashing start on Friday evening, competing at the Nazareth University Alumni Opener at the Golisano Training Center.
Rochester piled up 11 top-3 results, scored eight All-Atlantic Regional qualifying performances and added seven top-20 NCAA Division III marks at this early stage in the 2023-24 indoor season.
Junior
Cole Goodman led the 'Jacket performers on Friday, breaking one school record, earning two event wins and ranking in the top-2 in Division III in both the long and triple jump. Goodman's school record came in the long jump, as he posted a leap of 7.39 meters, smashing his old school mark of 7.21 meters that was set last season. His jump is currently the #2 distance in Division III this season.
Later on in the meet, Goodman cleared 15.30 meters in the triple jump, earning another event win and posting the top distance in Division III so far in 2023-24.
UR's other horizontal jumpers had terrific days as well, with Rochester compiling eight total top-8 finishes in those two events.
Manny Eribo was third in the long jump with a 6.83 meter leap, ranking #18 in NCAA Division III and earning an All-Atlantic Regional qualifying mark.
Sam Lorenzetti matched Eribo with a third place finish in the triple jump, posting a distance of 13.40 meters.
Additionally,
Kyle Lane finished sixth in the triple jump (12.88 meters) and seventh in the long jump (6.45 meters). Teammates
Gabe Thyne (6.55 meters) and
Aeden Angelone (6.50 meters), edged him out in the long jump, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
Junior
Jordan Johnson added another field event win for the Yellowjackets, claiming first in the weight throw with a toss of 16.79 meters, an AAR performance and current #14 mark in Division III.
Zajans Crapo ended fifth in the same event with a toss of 14.40 meters.
During the shot put, first-year
Ethan Beer was runner-up with a 14.07 meter mark, with
Dylan Rykert finishing fifth at 12.83 meters.
UR accumulated two other regional marks in field events, with
Aadit Jain qualifying in the high jump and
Cody Reeth hitting the standard in the pole vault. Jain finished second with a clearance of 1.92 meters, while Reeth reached 4.45 meters, finishing third in his event.
On the track, senior
Mitch Lienert sprinted to a third place finish in the 400 meter invitational race, earning a time of 50.06 seconds, a regional performance and #13 time in the country.
In the 60 meter invite race, both
P.J. London and Eribo qualified for the finals and each hit a regional qualifying standard. London finished fourth in the final at 7.09 seconds, while Eribo clocked in eighth at 7.15 seconds. Eribo's prelim time of 7.10 seconds was good enough for the regional qualifier. During the open 60 meter race, Lane placed third in 7.38 seconds.
Skye Crocker posted a solid result in the 1000 meters, ending fifth for Rochester in 2:37.69. London finished eighth in the 300 meters (36.75 seconds), while teammate
Max Creamer matched him with an eighth place result in the 500 meters (1:09.43).
Nolan Goldthwaite also finished eighth in the 3000 meters, crossing the finish in 9:13.11.
Rochester's 4x200 meter relay team of four first-years in
Arturo Contreras Jr.,
Diego De Los Santos,
Kyle Kelsey and
Elijah VanHoover placed third in 1:35.93, competing in their first collegiate meets.
To close the meet, UR's 4x400 meter relay of
Evan Bryant, Creamer, Lienert and
Christian Voloshen ended in sixth place with a time of 3:29.65.
The Yellowjackets are now away from competition for the duration of winter break and will return to action on January 20 at the SUNY Brockport Winter Invitational.
