AUSTIN, TX – University of Rochester lacrosse senior attacker Lucy Haggerty was named to College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America® Women's At-Large Team, earning second-team honors, as announced by CSC on Thursday.
 
Haggerty earns just the third Academic All-America honor in women's lacrosse program history and is the second individual to garner Academic All-America recognition and the program's first since 2000.
 
"I am extremely proud of Lucy, her commitment to academics along with our women's lacrosse program has been remarkable," Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Carly Ritchlin said. "Lucy has set a new standard for the women's lacrosse team on and off the field. As a Captain for us this year, she played an integral role in our team's success. And I am excited to welcome Lucy back in a new role as an assistant coach. It has been an honor for me to be able to coach Lucy and now I am looking forward to working beside her."
 
The 2023 recipient of UR's Terrence L. Gurnett Female Scholar-Athlete Award, Haggerty was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter for the Yellowjackets, appearing in and starting 41 games, tallying 38 goals and 72 assists for a total of 110 points, 70 draw controls, 29 ground balls, six caused turnovers and five game-winning goals.
 
This season, Haggerty started 16 games, scoring 24 goals and a team-high 34 assists, the second-most assists in a season in program history, along with 16 draw controls, 14 groundballs and three caused turnovers. Haggerty's 34 assists and 58 points ranked third and eighth in the Liberty League, respectively, while the senior earned five selections to the Liberty League Honor Roll this year.
 
Haggerty twice tied the single-game assist record this season with five vs. Clarkson and at St. Lawrence, and the Victor, NY native's 72 career assists are tied for the second-most all-time in program history. Additionally, Haggerty's single-season assist totals of 34 in 2023 and 26 in 2022 rank second and third in UR lacrosse single-season history.
 
A microbiology major with a pre-med concentration, Haggerty maintained a 4.0 GPA over her four years at UR, graduating summa cum laude this spring. Additionally, the Victor, NY native TAed for multiple organic chemistry classes over the past three semesters at UR and is a three-time Liberty League All-Academic selection. Haggerty was also named a Provost Circle Scholar last spring, is a member of the Psi Chi Psychology Honor Society and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa this spring.
 
Off the field, Haggerty worked in the Golisano Children's Hospital last summer as a pediatric close observer, providing 1-on-1 care for patients and assisting nurses throughout the summer, and also volunteered at Golisano's through the Friends of Strong program. And this year, Haggerty did an independent research project with Dr. Martin Pavelka in the Microbiology and Immunology department, studying the effects of photodynamic therapy on different bacteria.
 
While this summer, Haggerty recently started a job at Strong Memorial Hospital working as an ambulatory technologist, and plans on applying to medical school this year.
 
The 2022-23 CSC Academic All-America® At-Large Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the playing field and in the classroom in a variety of sports, including fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, water polo and wrestling.
 
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average at his or her current institution. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes men's and women's at-large honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
