Box Score MADISON, NJ – After a solid day one filled with upsets, the University of Rochester men's tennis team saw its run of competition end on day two at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships at Drew University.
Graduate student
Kai Yuminaga was the long Yellowjacket player to pick up a victory on Saturday, winning his second round match over Baruch's Tuna Nergizoglu by an 8-3 score. Yuminaga, a victor in the opening round over the top-seed in the event, reached the round of 16 at the ITA Regionals for the second straight year.
In the third round, the UR graduate student was matched up with Jingyuan Chen of UAA rival NYU for a spot with the quarterfinals on the line. After the first two rounds were played in 8-game pro-sets, the third round started matches with traditional scoring. In that match, Chen emerged victorious by a 6-3, 6-0 score.
Rochester also saw
Kavin Shukla still alive in the main draw of singles play, with the sophomore taking on Okada Tsubasa, a 9/16 seeded player from Rensselaer. Shukla was able to hang tough in his second round matchup, but ultimately dropped the 8-5 decision to be eliminated from the tournament.
UR added two doubles matches on day two of competition, with both teams falling in their second round matches.
The team of
Krish Vennam and
Josh Chu were matched up in round two with the top seeded team of Matthew Michibata and Harrison Maitland-Carter from TCNJ. UR's pair ran into a buzz saw, with the TCNJ duo earning an 8-0 victory to advance to the quarterfinals.
Rochester's other doubles team featured Yuminaga and
Ethan Samora with that pair matching up with Vassar's Eugene Lee and Jay Wong. It was a back and forth battle with the Vassar pair coming away with a hard-fought 8-7 victory.
