Goodman Earns Long Jump Title on Day One of Regionals

PITTSFORD, NY – University of Rochester men's track & field junior Cole Goodman won the regional title in the long jump and junior Gabe Thyne sits in pole position in the heptathlon with three events to go after the first day's action at the 2023-24 All-Atlantic Region Indoor Track & Field Championships (AARTFC), hosted by Nazareth University at the Golisano Training Center.
 
Goodman's 7.37m jump scored the junior a regional title in the long jump, while Manny Eribo finished seventh in the event with a jump of 6.85m.
 
In the heptathlon, Thyne sits in first place with 2,614 points following the first four events. Thyne finished in the top four of all four events, winning the high jump, finishing second in both the long jump and shot put, and fourth in the 60 meters.
 
Thyne successfully made it over the 1.82m bar in the high jump to take first place and tallied new personal bests in the 60 meters (7.31s) and shot put (10.24m), while jumping 6.49m in the long jump.
 
Elsewhere on the day, P.J. London finished 24th in the 60-meter prelims, clocking in at 7.07s, while both Vishal Yalamanchili and Nick Gaitanis scored top-20 marks in the 5,000 meters.
 
Yalamanchili paced the 'Jackets with his 15:10.51 time, good for 16th, while Gaitanis set a new indoor, personal-best time of 15:13.55, placing 19th.
 
Ethan Beer rounded out the Yellowjackets' first day of competition in the shot put, finishing 12th with his 14.71m throw, another new personal best.
 
Through six events, Rochester sits in fifth place overall in the team standings with 12 points, with Carnegie Mellon leading the 55-team field with 34.5 points, with SUNY Geneseo (25 pts) and Rowan (22 pts) rounding out the top three.
 
The Yellowjackets will get going on the final day of the All-Atlantic Region Indoor Championships on Saturday, March 2 at 10:00 a.m., with Thyne kicking things off with the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles.
