Thyne, Angelone atop Decathlon after Day One at Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY – The University of Rochester men's track & field team turned in several impressive performances on day one of the SUNY Brockport Multi & Invitational on Sunday at Shriver Stadium.
 
Through the first five events of the decathlon, the Yellowjackets have the top two performers and three of the top seven. Gabe Thyne sits in first place with 3,413 points, 119 ahead of Aeden Angelone in second with 3,294, while Ashton Tokarski is in seventh with 2,876 points.
 
The decathletes got their day started with the 100 meters, where Thyne and Angelone finished 1-2, while Tokarski finished sixth. Both Thyne and Tokarski netted PRs in the event, Thyne clocking in at 11.35 while Tokarski crossed the finish line in 11.66s.
 
Thyne also equaled his personal best in the long jump, again leading the field with a 6.55m leap while Angelone finished fourth (6.13m) and Tokarski ended in eighth (5.80m). In the shot put, Angelone led the trio with an 11.72m throw, good for first, while Thyne and Tokarski finished fourth (10.00m) and sixth (9.60m), respectively.
 
In the decathlon high jump, Thyne and Angelone tied for second at 1.81m, while Tokarski set a new PR with his 1.72m result, tying for fifth. Lastly, Thyne won the 400 meters with his 50.36s time, while Angelone finished third (52.44) and Tokarski came in seventh (55.20).
 
Elsewhere on the day, the Yellowjackets tallied numerous top-five results both on the track and in the field events. The throwers got their day started with the discus competition, with Ethan Beer leading a pack of four 'Jackets in the top 10.
 
Beer's new personal-best discus throw of 42.75m was good for second, while Kevin Fobare placed fifth (39.59m), Jordan Johnson finished sixth (39.03m) and Dylan Rykert ended in 10th (37.42m).
 
Beer also led UR in the shot, hitting the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field (AARTFC) qualifying mark with his 14.52m throw, good for fourth. Fobare and Rykert rounded out UR's top-three competitors in the field, placing seventh and ninth, respectively, with their 13.01m and 12.51m throws.
 
In the hammer throw, Johnson paced four Yellowjackets who earned top-seven results, coming in second with a 51.88m throw. Both Johnson and Nolan Ragland, who finished third with a 51.86m throw, earned AARTFC qualifiers, while Zajans Crapo placed fifth (45.56m) and Armaan Butler hit a new season-high mark with his 45.39m throw, good for seventh.
 
Johnson again led Rochester in the final throwing event of the day, the javelin toss, winning the event with a 54.71m throw, an AARTFC qualifier and currently a top-50 mark in Division III. Crapo again joined Johnson in the top 10, placing sixth with his 44.63m toss.
 
In the jumping events, Kyle Lane added another event win to UR's tally, leading the way in the long jump. Lane won the competition with his 6.60m leap, while Maxwell Zielonka set a new PR with his 6.52m jump to finish second.
 
Rochester also had the second-place finisher in the high jump, where Aadit Jain tied for second at 1.86m, while Joseph Smith was UR's top finisher in the triple jump, leaping 12.27m to finish ninth.
 
Gus Smith and Drew Garringer got the Yellowjackets day started on the track with the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively, with times of 10:29.70 and 10:35.64.
 
In the 1,500 meters, Skye Crocker was UR's top finisher, crossing the finish line with a new PR of 4:06.53 to finish fourth overall. While in the 110-meter hurdles, the Yellowjackets scored three top-10 finishers, with Garrett Dietrich, Mark Magyar and Elijah VanHoover placing seventh (16.89), eighth (17.07) and ninth (17.08), respectively, with Dietrich notching a new PR.
 
The same trio also added three more top-10 results in the 400-meter hurdles, with Magyar and VanHoover setting new season-high marks. Magyar led the pack with a second-place finish, clocking in at 58.30, while VanHoover finished eighth (1:01.87) and Dietrich came in right behind him in ninth (1:02.88).
 
Christian Voloshen was Rochester's top finisher in a 53-person 800-meter field, placing sixth with his time of 2:01.88, while Richard Santarosa paced UR in the 5,000 meters, crossing the finish line in 16:00.23 to finish fifth.
 
Voloshen, along with Crocker, Magyar, and Colin Hascup wrapped up the Yellowjackets day with the 4x400-meter relay placing third in their heat and fourth overall with a time of 3:35.26s.
 
The final day of the Brockport Multi & Invitational will wrap up on Monday, April 15 with the final five decathlon events beginning at 12:35 p.m.
