TROY, NY – The University of Rochester men's track & field team earned four more Liberty League titles on Saturday to finish second at the 2024 Liberty League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by RPI at the Ned Harkness Field & Track.
Rochester finished the meet with 213 team points, claiming six individual titles. RPI took home the team title with 308.5 points, while RIT finished third with 121.5.
For the second-straight day, Rochester claimed the majority of its event wins in the field events, taking home Liberty League titles in the decathlon, discus, shot put and shot put.
Cole Goodman and
Jordan Johnson each added another title to their tally, with Goodman winning the triple jump after taking first in the long jump on Friday, while Johnson finished first in the discus after winning the javelin.
Rochester's other titles came in the decathlon, where
Aeden Angelone finished atop the podium, and in the shot put, where first-year
Ethan Beer notched the event win.
Goodman led six Yellowjacket finishers in the triple jump, with Rochester taking all of the top six spots. Goodman finished first with a 15.16m jump,
Sam Lorenzetti scored second with a 13.86m leap,
Kyle Lane ended in third with a 13.74m jump,
Joseph Smith placed fourth with a 13.59m jump,
Maxwell Zielonka earned fifth at 13.20m and
Manny Eribo finished sixth, jumping 12.98m.
Goodman, Lorenzetti, Lane and Smith's jumps all qualified for the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Championships (AARTFC) on May 15, while Lane, Smith and Zielonka all set new PRs. In addition, Goodman was named the Liberty League Men's Field Performer of the Meet for his performance over the two days.
In the discus, Johnson won with a 45.53m throw, a new personal best and AARTFC qualifier, while three 'Jackets joined him in the top eight. Beer finished fourth (42.87m),
Dylan Rykert set a new PR, finishing sixth (40.78m) and
Zajans Crapo placed seventh (37.92m).
Beer also finished atop the podium in the shot put with a 14.42m toss, while Johnson took fifth (13.73m) and Rykert finished seventh (13.39m).
Angelone scored UR's last Liberty League title of the day in the decathlon, tallying 6,358 points, the 13th-best decathlon score in NCAA Division III. After ending day one in second place, Angelone won the pole vault (4.00m), finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.33) and javelin (51.37m), third in the discus (31.28m) and fifth in the 1,500 meters (4:55.21).
Gabe Thyne finished second in the decathlon with a new PR of 6,087 points, the 24th-best decathlon score in DIII. Thyne PRed in the 110-meter hurdles (1st, 16.04), discus (2nd, 33.10m) and pole vault (3rd, 3.60), while finishing third in the 1,500 meters (4:47.80) and ninth in the javelin (31.22m).
Also in the decathlon,
Ashton Tokarski finished fifth overall with 5,404 points, a new personal best score. The first-year set new PRs in all five events on day two of the decathlon, finishing fourth in both the javelin (36.47m) and 1,500 meters (4:52.96), fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (17:48) and sixth in both the discus (26.46m) and pole vault (3.40m).
Elsewhere in the field events,
Aadit Jain finished second in the high jump, surpassing the 1.95m bar to qualifying for regionals, while
Tate Finger finished fourth at 1.80m.
In the track events, UR's 4x100 relay of
Evan Bryant,
Mitch Lienert,
P.J. London and Eribo hit another AARTFC qualifier, finishing second overall with a 42.32 time. The foursome got UR's day started, and
Garrett Dietrich followed up with an eighth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, setting a new PR with his 16.76s time.
In the 400 meters, Bryant, UR's lone qualifier from Friday, crossed the finish line in 50.72s, good for sixth, while London added another AARTFC qualifier in the 100 meters, clocking in at 10.96s, fourth overall, with Eribo finishing eighth (11.14).
After winning his 800-meter heat on Friday to qualify for Saturday's final,
Sean Hendricks placed eighth in the event, coming in with a time of 2:00.49s, while
Mark Magyar and
Nick Krein finished fourth (57.36) and eighth (58.96) in the 400-meter hurdles, with Magyar setting a new PR.
London wrapped up his day with the 200-meter finals, nearly tying the school record with his 21.73s time, one-hundredth of a second off the record, to finish fourth with a new PR and regional qualifier, with Lienert close behind in fifth place, clocking in at 22.19s.
In the final individual event on the track,
Nick Gaitanis was UR's lone scorer in the 5,000 meters, earning a fifth-place result with his 15:14.54 time, an AARTFC qualifier. Then Rochester's 4x400-meter relay wrapped up the championships with a third-place finish, as Bryant, Lienert,
Max Creamer and Hendricks ran to a 3:20.33 time, good for another regional mark.
Overall, Rochester notched 11 AARTFC qualifiers and more than 18 new personal bests on the second day of the Liberty League Outdoor Championships, in addition to their six Liberty League Individual Champions.
Rochester is next in action on Saturday, May 11 when they travel to Williamstown, MA for the Williams College Farley Inter-Regional Extravaganza, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
