University of Rochester senior goalie
Kara Houston was named a Third-Team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), as announced by the NFHCA on Tuesday.
Â
A First-Team All-Region and All-Liberty League selection, as well as the Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year, Houston put together another stellar season in goal for the Yellowjackets, ranking as one of the top goalies not only in the Liberty League, but NCAA Division III.
Â
"I am incredibly grateful to the NFHCA All-America Committee for selecting Kara," Head Coach
Wendy Andreatta said. "Few goalkeepers had as significant an impact as Kara did this season. With one of the best save percentages in the nation, she consistently performed at the highest level throughout the year. Kara's standout moments were numerous, including a career-high 18-save performance against Hamilton College, a narrow one-goal loss to the eventual national champions, Tufts, and three thrilling shootout victories that helped us reach the conference tournament. Kara had an exceptional four-year career as a Yellowjacket, and I couldn't be happier for her to receive this well-deserved honor!"
Â
The senior appeared in and started all 20 games for the Yellowjackets this season, playing 1,255 minutes of a possible 1,307 minutes in goal. Facing 256 total shots, Houston allowed just 19 goals for a 0.91 goals against average, and made 122 saves for a 0.865 save percentage.
Â
The Woodstock, NY native compiled a 13-7 record and tallied eight shutouts, five as an individual and three combined, and allowed one goal or fewer in 15-of-20 contests. Statistically, Houston ranked fourth in NCAA Division III in save percentage and 12th in goals against average, leading the Liberty League in both categories.
Â
Houston notched double-digit saves in six games this season, including a career-high 18 in a shutout against Hamilton on Sept. 10, and helped URochester to a trio of victories via a shootout this season, turning in a dominant performance against Vassar on Oct. 17 in which she stopped all three of the Brewers' shootout tries.
Â
For her career, Houston appeared in 79 games and played 4,729 minutes in goal, compiling a 52-21 record and 333 career saves. Houston graduates as Rochester's all-time leader in shutouts with 25, as well as ranked second in program history in wins, goals against average (0.85) and goalie games played, third in goalie minutes played, and seventh in saves and save percentage (.832).
Â
Houston becomes the 19th All-America in program history, Rochester's first since Maeve Fogarty earned First-Team honors in 2023, and the 16th Yellowjacket to earn All-America accolades under Head Coach
Wendy Andreatta. The senior is also the first Yellowjacket goalie to earn NFHCA All-America honors since Tara Lamberti `16 in 2015.
