Yellowjacket Throwers Lead UR in First Outdoor Meet

GENESEO, NY – Highlighted by 10 top-10 results across three throwing events, the University of Rochester women's track & field team opened the outdoor season at the Bill Q Invitational at SUNY Geneseo at the Geneseo Track & Field Complex on Saturday.
 
The meet was originally scheduled to be hosted by RIT in Henrietta, NY, but was moved to Geneseo due to inclement weather in Rochester.
 
The 'Jackets as a team piled up eight top-three results and a pair of All-Atlantic Region Outdoor Track & Field Championship qualifiers in their first meet of the outdoor campaign.
 
Cora Rose took home a pair of first-place results, winning both the discus and shot put competitions. Rose netted All-Atlantic Regional qualifying marks in both events, setting a new personal-best with a 42.25m toss in the discus, while throwing the shot put 12.36m. The senior's discus throw currently ranks 8th on the NCAA Division III Outdoor Qualifying List, while Rose's shot put ranks 27th.
 
Madison Vargas joined Rose in the top five of both events, finishing fifth in the discus with a 37.13m throw, currently the 47th-longest discus toss in DIII, and fifth in the shot put with a 11.46m throw.
 
Deziree Garrick joined Rose and Vargas in the shot put with a sixth-place finish and 11.31m throw, while Aimee Oszer placed in the top 10 of both the discus (7th, 35.04m) and shot put (9th, 10.47m), and led UR in the javelin toss.
 
Oszer led a trio of Yellowjackets in the top 10 of the javelin, taking home third with a 31.40m throw, while Katie Atkins placed fifth with a new personal-best 29.83m toss, and Victoria Bermeo's 25.05m throw was good for 10th.
 
Elsewhere in the field events, Abby Kopeck finished second in the pole vault with a height of 2.75m, while Nora Dreslin and Julia Largett took second and third in the high jump, with heights of 1.38m and 1.28m, respectively.
 
In the long jump, UR had three top-10 finishers, led by Ashleigh Barrett's 4.93m fifth-place jump, while Gracie Conlan finished sixth with a new PR, 4.92m, and Quinn Taylor placed 10th (4.79m).
 
Emily Dill got Rochester's day started on the track with a third-place result in the 1,500 meters, clocking in with a new personal-best time of 4:56.29. Dill would also help wrap up the day for the Yellowjackets, taking home first in the 4x400-meter relay alongside Isabella Doty, Julie Durham and Talia Christopher, combining for a time of 4:22.02.
 
Zoe Noble was UR's top finisher in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 18.92 seconds, good for a fifth-place finish. While in the 100 meters, both Tina Kyriacou and Lizzie Merrill placed in the top six, with Kyriacou coming in fourth (13.48s) and Merrill taking sixth with a new PR of 13.56 seconds.
 
In both the 200 meters and 400 meters, Maya Hatch led the Yellowjackets with fifth-place finishes, crossing the finish line in 27.69 seconds in the 200, while setting a new PR of 1:01.55 in the 400.
 
Rita Sciortino also set a new personal best in the 400 meters, placing fifth with a time of 1:01.70, and Peyton Classer clocked in at 1:03.11, good for ninth. While in the 200 meters, Merrill and Kyriacou joined Hatch in the top 10, with Merrill placing sixth (27.86s) and Kyriacou finishing 10th (28.33s).
 
The Yellowjackets next have a split-squad weekend, competing at both the William & Mary Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, VA, on April 4-5, and the SUNY Geneseo Early Season Invitational in Geneseo, NY on Saturday, April 5.
