LEWISBURG, PA – The University of Rochester track and field team saw its distance runners compile several tremendous races on day one of the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday evening at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium.
Overall, the Yellowjacket men's and women's teams were represented by ten runners and two field event athletes on day one of competition, with those individuals compiling a total of 10 All-Atlantic Region qualifying performances.
Additionally, nine of the ten runners established new personal-best times during Saturday's action.
Leading the way was senior
Megan Bell who broke the Rochester women's school record in the 1500 meters in her first collegiate race in the event. Bell finished sixth of 83 runners in the invite race, crossing the finish in 4:27.12, edging out the UR record by .02 over Jordan Hurlbut's time from the 2021 season.
Bell's time also ranks number two so far on the Division III performance list, with the UR senior also currently ranking #1 in both the 400 meters and 800 meters at this point in the outdoor campaign.
Fellow senior
Sab Lin earned a heat win during the 3000 meter steeplechase, finishing with a time of 11:11.45, easily hitting the standard for the AARTFC meet later this spring. Lin finished 19th of 62 runners in the field.
Two UR runners also competed in the open 1500 meters, with
Emily Dill and
Maria Khalifeh ranking 16th and 38th, respectively, in a race featuring 86 runners. Dill clocked in at 4:46.76, while Khalifeh finished in 4:49.82, with both hitting AARTFC marks.
Senior
Ellie Ponko crossed the finish line in the 5000 meter invitational race in 17:49.06, another regional qualifier and PR.
Closing the action on the track were
Alicia Lawson and
Ella Blau who ran in the 10000 meter invite heats. Lawson finished 36th in 38:04.40, while Blau was two spots behind at 38:10.87, with both hitting the regional standard in the process.
In the field,
Cora Rose finished 14th in the discus with an AARTFC qualifying distance of 40.86 meters, while
Madison Vargas finished 33rd at 35.32 meters.
Representing the men were seniors
Vishal Yalamanchili,
James Catania and
Sean Hendricks.
Yalamanchili posted a PR of over a minute in the 10000 meters, running to 8th place among 39 runners in the open event, crossing the finish in 30:49.57, a regional qualifier.
Catania competed in the 5000 meter invite race and finished 48th of 96 runners with a PR time of 14:43.93. His time ranks inside the NCAA Division III top-50 and was well inside the standard for regionals.
Hendricks' time was 4:02.87 in the 1500 meters invitational race, placing the senior 73rd overall.
Multiple other Yellowjacket athletes are competing on day two at Bucknell on Sunday, with action starting at 11 am.
