WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Led by
Alvin Su atop the individual leaderboard, the 22nd-ranked University of Rochester men's golf team sits in second place at six-over following the opening round of The Northeast Elite Invitational at the Williamsport Country Club.
Su turned in a tremendous performance to lead the Yellowjackets on day one, finishing the day at four-under par, first on the individual leaderboard. Su sank six birdies, finishing the front nine at one-under before birdieing each of the last three holes to close out the back nine at three-under, and 67 overall.
The sophomore birdied a pair of par-fives and the par-three 17th hole to wrap up his opening round, and head into the clubhouse with the top individual score, and one of just four players to turn in around under par.
Arjun Aujla is Rochester's next highest golfer on the leaderboard, having shot a 73, a two-over par round. Aujla sank a pair of birdies on the front nine on the par-four fourth hole and par-five sixth hole, before finishing off the back nine with another birdie on the par-five 18th hole. The junior finished an even par on the front nine and two over on the back nine and sits in 18th overall after the first day of competition.
Both
Galen Fowles and
Anderson Palm carded four-over rounds to round out Rochester's top-four golfers and sit in a tie for 33rd place. Fowlers shot a consistent two over on both the front nine and back nine, wrapping up his day with a birdie on the 18th hole, while Palm was three over on the front nine and one over on the back nine, tallying a trio of birdies.
All four of UR's scoring golfers beat the course average, with the 89 golfers averaging 76.89 on the par-71, 6,583-yard course on day one.
Also competing for Rochester,
Eddie Ren sits at 10-over through the first day of competition, tied for 75th, while
Josh Pethel, competing as an individual, shot an even par. Pethel notched a pair of birdies on the front nine to shoot one under, and then added three more birdies on the back nine to help recover from a rough early hole and finish at par, tied for fourth overall on the individual leaderboard.
As a team, the Yellowjackets combined for six-over par and sit in second place following the opening round of The Northeast Elite. McDaniel holds the top spot on the team leaderboard at one under, while 19th-ranked Gettysburg is one stroke behind Rochester in third at seven-over par.
Day two of The Northeast Elite will get started on Monday, Sept. 29, at 9:00 a.m., with the Yellowjackets teeing off beginning at 11:51 a.m.
