Rochester Goes 1-1 on Opening Day of UAA Match Play

BATAVIA, OH – The University of Rochester golf team opened its 2025-26 season on Monday afternoon, splitting a pair of match play decisions on day one of the 2025 UAA Championship at the Elk Run Golf Club.
 
During the opening match, the Yellowjackets were defeated 4-2 by 3rd-ranked Emory University 4-2, despite Rochester battling the Eagles throughout the round, even holding a lead near the turn.
 
In the afternoon, the Yellowjackets rebounded with a 4-2 win against New York University, leveling its tournament record at 1-1.
 
Against Emory, Rochester's wins came from sophomore Alvin Su and first-year Ray Su. Alvin ended up winning 2&1 (up 2 holes with 1 remaining) in a battle against Brian Hanson, a 3-time All-American and reigning UAA MVP.
 
Su was even par overall in his round through 17 holes, when the match was decided.
 
Ray's victory came against Dru Devata, with the URochester rookie nearly going wire-to-wire, winning 3&1 after taking the lead for good following a birdie on the third hole. R. Su finished with a 2-under par score through his 17 holes play against Emory.
 
Emory took the remaining four matches to earn the opening round victory overall. Pearse Lucas defeated Anderson Palm 2&1, with Zach Pelzar topping Galen Fowles by the same margin. Despite the loss, Fowles put together a strong round, sitting a 1-under on his round through
 
UR's Arjun Aujla battled Brady Lagendyk to the final hole but ended up falling 2-down, ending up shooting an even-par round of 71 in the morning wave. Emory All-American Kevin Mu finished off Josh Pethel in the final match by a 4&3 score.
 
During the NYU match A. Su posted a convincing win, topping Shray Patel 5&4 for the Yellowjackets' first point. The Rochester sophomore sat at 1-under par after 14 holes when the match was concluded.
 
In the second slot in the playing order, Aujla won over Ryan Leung 1-up, shooting an overall round score of 1-over, 72.
 
R. Su finished his first action in a Yellowjacket uniform with a 2-0 record after also earning another 1-up win, defeating Oscar Uribe in the afternoon wave. After trailing by one hole after 16 holes, Su won the final two holes of the match with pars on hole 17 and 18 to rally for the victory.
 
NYU's lone win in the match against URochester was by Steven Liu who won 3&2 over Palm.
 
The remaining two matches both ended all square. Fowles and Bryan Zhao were close throughout, with a birdie from Zhao on hole 17 tying things up for good.
 
Pethel also knotted his match with Jomyuth Luangtana-anan, carding an even-par round of 71. Pethel got in front by as much as 5-up, but Luangtana-anan had a strong back nine holes, shooting 4-under to rally, scraping out half a point.
 
In the other morning match, #9 Carnegie Mellon defeated NYU 4-2, while later in the day Emory topped Carnegie Mellon 4-2 in a matchup of top-10 ranked squads.
 
The round-robin match play event concludes on Tuesday morning, with Rochester battling Carnegie Mellon and Emory taking on NYU. After those matches, the team with the best record will be declared champion, with the first tiebreaker after head-to-head result being the total number of individual matches won.
