BROCKPORT, NY – The University of Rochester men's track and field turned in several top finishes at the SUNY Brockport and Multi Invitational on Sunday afternoon, piling up a dozen top-3 results along with six All-Atlantic Regional qualifying performances.
Among the top-3's, URochester had three wins, coming from the 4x100 meter relay,
Joe Berry in the 10000 meters and
Ethan Beer in the discus. The relay team featured
Aadit Jain,
Barack Abdallah,
Evan Bryant and
William Stiska and finished first in a regional qualifying time of 42.44 seconds.
In the 10000 meters, Berry finished first in 32:25.58, also a regional qualifier, while Beer's win came in the discus, where he placed first among 47 entries with a mark of 43.17 meters.
The Yellowjackets long jump group finished in second though sixth place in that event, with the top two finishers, Jain and
Reward Mulauzi, qualifying for regionals. Jain placed second at 6.85 meters, while Mulazui was third in 6.82 meters. Rounding out the top-6 finishers were
Austin Lansey,
Kyle Kelsey and
Oliver Annon, all who finished with jumps of 6.49 meters or better.
Lansey added a runner-up finish in the triple jump, earning a regional qualifying mark of 13.68 meters, while Kelsey also finished in the top-10.
UR's other regional performance came from first-year
Alex Hermann in the hammer throw. The 'Jacket rookie placed fourth of 16 during the invite event with a mark of 51.42 meters. Teammate
Ethan Kaufman was sixth at 48.27 meters.
It was a close race between two Rochester teams in the 4x400 meter relay, with a photo finish determining which Yellowjacket team finished in second and third place. Both squads ended at 3:26.82, with the 'A' relay team of
Jaubert Black,
Elijah VanHoover,
Ivan Wolf-Mialky and Bryant edging out the 'B' squad of Max Freeman,
Greg Palma,
Henry Hasselbacher and
Owen Hatungimana by .003 seconds at the finish.
Other top-3 finishers on the afternoon included
Will Straub in the 3000 meter steeplechase, Abdallah in the 100 meters and 200 meters, and Hatungimana in the 400 meter hurdles.
Straub placed third among 16 in his race in 10:28.46, while Hatungimana ended in the same position in his event, crossing the finish in 57.73 seconds.
Abdallah completed his strong day with a 11.12 second time in the 100 meters and 22.73 second sprint during the 200 meters. In both races he defeated over 50 runners. Joining Abdallah in the top-8 during the 200 meters were Stiska (5th, 22.77 seconds), Palma (7th, 22.87 seconds), and Bryant (8th, 22.99 seconds).
UR also saw other top results in the field from
Ray Watkins in the high jump, ranking fourth,
Sean Elliott placing fourth in the discus and Beer ending sixth in the shot put. Watkins cleared 1.78 meters, Elliott posted a mark of 40.79 meters and Beer finished with a top throw of 14.09 meters. Elliott also ranked as the top Yellowjacket in the javelin with a throw of 36.68 meters, placing 14th.
Leading URochester in the 400 meters,
Trevor Whitney was eighth among 38 runners in 51.53 seconds, while
Owen Alexander matched that finish during the 110 meter hurdles, securing a time of 16.26 seconds.
Sam Cohen earned a 13th place finished in the 1500 meters, pacing the UR entrants, crossing the finish in 4:13.06. Also securing a solid result was Wolf-Mialky in the 400 meter hurdles, placing fifth in 58.06 seconds.
Day one of the decathlon also took place on Sunday, with five Rochester athletes ranking in the top-12 of that event after the opening day. Sophomore
Emmett Hansen sits in second place with 3,388 points, while teammate
Ashton Tokarski scored 3,254 points to rank fourth. Hansen finished no lower than fifth in the opening five events, while Tokarski secured three top-6 results in the decathlon, including two in third.
Joining that group in the decathlon were
Quillan Shimp,
Jack Maness and
Brant Nicholls who sit in 10th, 11th and 12th place, respectively, at the halfway point of the multi-event competition. Day two of the decathlon wraps up on Monday.
URochester's next meet is it second, and final, home competition of the season, with the Yellowjackets hosting the UR Alumni Invitational at Fauver Stadium on Sunday, April 19.
