Box ScoreCLAREMONT, CA- The University of Rochester mens tennis team picked up a solid regional win in its last match on the teams California spring break trip, winning 6-3 over Vassar College on Friday afternoon at the Claremont Club.
Rochester senior
Boris Borovcanin was a double winner on the day, capturing the match clinching point in his 6-4, 6-2 win at 4th singles. Borovcanin also teamed with freshman
Sam Leeman to win an 8-4 decision at 3rd doubles for Rochester (7-4).
The Brewers (6-6), ranked #11 in the Northeast region, were able to get on the board first with an 8-4 win at 1st doubles. The Yellowjackets responded though, taking both matches at #2 and #3 doubles. The 2nd doubles team was made up of sophomores
Ben Shapiro and
Ian Baranowski and won 8-5 adding to the Borovcanin/Leeman win at #3.
Heading into singles with a 2-1 lead, Baranowski got things started with a straight set win (6-1, 6-4) over Evan Udine at the 5th position, putting UR up 3-1.
The lead was stretched to 4-1 after
Julian Danko won a three-set match at #3 over Christian Phelps. The junior won 0-6, 6-3, 6-1, setting up Borovcanin's match clinching win at #4.
Rounding out the matches, freshman
Tony Zhao won 6-4, 7-5 at #6 while Vassar's Nick Litsky won over freshman
Jonny Baker at #2 in three sets. Shapiro lost at 1st singles to Daniel Cooper in three, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
When UR returns to Rochester, its next match is scheduled for March 27th at home against Nazareth at 4 pm.
