Vassar Rallies For 5-4 Win Over Rochester

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Vassar College rallied for a 5-4 victory in men's tennis action on Saturday, defeating the University of Rochester at Vassar's Newell Field House.

After UR jumped out to an early lead, Vassar would rally, tying things up at 4-4, sending the match to a winner-take-all scenario at #6 singles between UR freshman Yifan Shen and Vassar's Alexander Luckmann.  Luckman would take the opening set 6-4, only to see Shen respond with a 7-5 win in set two.  In the third and deciding set, Shen got within one game of the match, sitting up 5-4, but VC's Luckmann would grab three straight games to go onto a 7-5 win in the final set, completing the Brewers comeback.

Rochester (3-3) got off to a quick start in the match, winning all three doubles points.

The #1 doubles team of Aaron Mevorach and Masaru Fujimaki were 8-3 winners over Nick Litsky and Luckmann.  That was followed by Tanmay Thakkar and Sahaj Somani winning 8-4 at #3 doubles for UR.  The pair topped Vassar's Juan Felipe Laso and Dom Demeterfi.

Rochester's #2 doubles team completed the sweep by winning 8-7.  That match featured Rochester's Andrew Nunno and Sam Leeman against Vassar's Jeremy Auh and Allen Sokolov.

In singles, Somani earned the first point, topping Auh 6-4, 7-5 at #5 singles, pulling Rochester up 4-0 and within one match of the win.

That's when the Brewers (5-2) began to mount their comeback.  Litsky topped Fujimaki in straight sets at #1, winning 7-5, 6-2.  That was followed by Laso outlasting Leeman at #3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and Jamie Anderson topping Mevorach at #4 in a tough match, winning 7-5, 7-6.  The match was now 4-3 in favor of UR.

At #2 singles, Sokolov picked up a big win to even the match at 4-4, defeating UR's Nunno in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, leaving only the #6 singles match on court to decide the victor.

UR is right back in action on Sunday, taking on another Liberty League team in RPI, with the match taking place at Tri-City Fitness in Latham, NY starting at 11 am.
