Box Score

RIO PIEDRAS, PUERTO RICO – The University of Rochester men's tennis team had three double-winners in a 7-2 victory over the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras on Wednesday afternoon as part of the teams spring break trip to Puerto Rico.

Senior Sam Leeman along with freshman Tanmay Thakkar and Sahaj Somani each picked up two wins to continue their strong seasons for the Yellowjackets (6-4).

In doubles, the freshman combo of Thakkar and Somani started things off with an 8-0 win at #3 over Rio-Piedras' Diego Orro and Wilfredo Negron.  At #2, Leeman paired with Andrew Nunno for an 8-3 win over Jose de Jesus and Andres Lopez.  Finishing off the doubles competition, Rio Piedras got on the board with an 8-7 (5) win from Shandor Gomez and Moises Laundran over Aaron Mevorach and Masaru Fujimaki.

Leeman would then earn the first point in singles at #2, topping Lopez 6-3, 6-2.  Following that, Mevorach won at #4 over Alejandro Rodriguez 6-0, 6-2 to pull UR up 4-1.

Rio Piedras earned its second and final point at #3 with Gomez winning in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 10-7 over Nunno.

Sophomore Masaru Fujimaki posted the match clinching win at the #1 spot, winning 6-3, 7-6 (4) over Orro.  Closing out the victory, Thakkar defeated Jan Saria 6-1, 6-3 at #5 while Somani battled back after a first set loss to win over de Jesus 4-6, 6-4, 10-2 at #6.

Rochester concludes its spring break schedule of match on Thursday with another match against Rio Piedras.  Wednesday's hosts served as a fill-in opponent after UR's scheduled opponent, Nichols College, couldn't get to Puerto Rico because of the snowstorm currently in the northeast.
