OBERLIN, OH – Host Oberlin College rallied for the last two singles points to edge the University of Rochester men's tennis team 5-4 on Saturday at Oberlin's Heisman Field House.
Oberlin (11-6) got the clinching point at sixth singles from Paul Farah after going up 2-0 in the third set, his opponent, UR's
Yifan Shen, was forced to retire. The set up to that match was the Yeomen's Manickam Manickam who defeated
Tanmay Thakkar at #5 6-2, 6-3 to even the match at 4-all.
In doubles, Rochester (7-7), was able to jump out to a 2-1 lead. The #1 doubles pair of
Aaron Mevorach and Thakkar posted an 8-2 win over Jeremy Lichtmacher and Ian Paik. After Oberlin responded with an 8-4 win at #2 from Camron Cohen and Stephen Gruppuso over
Masaru Fujimaki and
Jun Yuminaga, the Yellowjackets closed doubles with a 9-7 win from
Sam Leeman and
Mattias Hartveit at #3. The UR duo topped Michael Drougas and Abraham Davis.
Singles started with the Yeomen winning the #1 singles match to even the score at 2-2. Paik topped Leman 6-4, 6-4. That was followed by a win from Gruppuso over Mevorach in three sets at #3, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to pull Oberlin ahead 3-2.
Rochester was able to take the next two matches, coming at #4 and #2 from Yuminaga and Fujimaki to edge ahead 4-3 in the overall match. Yuminaga topped Robert Gittings 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 while Fujimaki defeated Drougas 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, setting up the final two matches at #5 and #6.
UR returns to action on Sunday, playing John Carroll University at Cleveland State University beginning at 8 am.
