GENESEO, NY – It was a strong start to the SUNY Geneseo Quad meet on Saturday as the University of Rochester men's track and field team competed in the decathlon and a pair of distances races on day one of the weekend competition.
Rochester's
Zach Spergel crossed the finish line in first in the 5000 meters, running a time of 15:27.55. Teammate
James Catania ended in second 12 seconds behind and
Alec Glazier scrapped out a team point with a sixth place finish.
In the 10000 meters, UR had four top-6 finishers led by
Nick Gaitanis in second. He finished in 33:13.68. Three other Yellowjackets broke 34 minutes as well, with
Vishal Yalamanchili finishing third (33:29.78),
Jack Rivet crossing fourth (33:30.53) and
Griffin Weiner sixth (33:49.38).
The Yellowjackets also sit 1-2-3 in the standings of the decathlon through five events.
Aeden Angelone is first with 3,365 points on day one, while
Alex Opsahl is second with 3,242 points and
Jarod Forer is third with 3,097 points.
Angelone finished first among the nine competitors in the high jump and was second in the other four events on the day. Opsahl was best in the long jump and shot put while Forer excelled in the running events, ranking best in the 100 meters and 400 meters.
Through the two completed events, Rochester's men sit first among the four teams competing with 38 team points.
