PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – For the second time this week, the University of Rochester men's track and field team turned in a terrific performance on the River Campus, claiming the team title at the annual University of Rochester Alumni Invitational at Fauver Stadium and the GLC Throws Complex.
Overall on the day, the Yellowjackets scored six event wins, had nine other top-3 results and secured ten All-Atlantic Regional qualifying marks or times.
Rochester earned the team win with 186.5 points across the meet, clearing second place Brockport by over 30 team points. RIT was third at 145, with seven total teams competing.
Two UR sprinters finished as double-winners, as senior
P.J. London and first-year
William Stiska each claimed a relay title and individual crown. The two were joined on the winning 4x100 meter relay by teammates
Evan Bryant and
Manny Eribo to finish first in the race with a 42.30 second time, qualifying for the AARTFC meet.
Stiska's individual win came in the 100 meters, while London secured first place in the 200 meters. In the 100, Stiska finished in 10.89 seconds, while London crossed the finish line in 21.88 seconds, a new personal-best.
Rochester also got event wins from first-year's
Liam Sakakeeny and
Austin Lansey along with senior
Cole Goodman.
Sakakeeny ran the 5000 meters in 15:23.10, leading five 'Jackets inside the top-8 finishers. Teammate
Sam Cohen was second in 15:33.93, while
Richard Santarosa finished fourth at 15:59.64. Fifth place finisher
William Eskenas earned a PR-time of 16:02.45, while
Jonathan Sullo ranked seventh with a time of 16:19.18.
Butler qualified for regionals in the hammer throw.
Lansey captured the long jump title with a 7.00 meter mark, while Goodman's 14.37 meter distance in the triple jump was good for first place. Both hit the regional standard, and Lansey's long jump mark is top-40 on the NCAA Division III performance list.
Additionally, Lansey finished third behind Goodman in the triple jump at 13.45 meters, while Goodman placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 6.77 meters. Eribo also scored in the long jump for UR, ending fourth at 6.78 meters.
Ethan Beer's runner-up finish in the discus throw was a personal-best by over three meters, as the sophomore finished at 48.01 meters, ranking #37 in the current Division III rankings. Beer also secured second place in the shot put, posting a distance of 13.94 meters.
The rest of the throwers also had solid days for the Yellowjackets, with
Jordan Johnson ending second in the hammer throw (56.49m, AARTFC),
Zajans Crapo ending as the runner-up in the javelin (48.47m). Also, in the hammer,
Armaan Butler and
Kevin Fobare hit the regional standard. Butler tossed 49.98 meters and Fobare finished at 49.71 meters, a new personal-best. Crapo finished off the scorers in that event in seventh (46.82m), while Fobare hit that ranking in the discus (39.49m).
Rochester's other relay, the 4x400 meter group of Bryant,
Trevor Whitney, London and
Arturo Contreras Jr. finished second to close out action on the track for the day. The quartet finished in 3:22.38, qualifying for regionals.
Contreras led three 'Jackets in the top-8 in the 400 meters, running an over 2-second personal-best with a time of 51.01 seconds, ranking fourth in the field.
Owen Hatungimana was sixth at 51.35 seconds and
Colin Hascup finished seventh at 51.43 seconds.
Two other regional qualifying marks were earned by
Cody Reeth during the pole vault and
Jacob Bernd in the 1500 meters. Reeth finished his competition in third, clearing 4.47 meters with his top vault. Bernd, meanwhile, was fifth in his race, crossing the finish in 3:59.05. Teammate
Skye Crocker finished seventh in the same race with a PR time of 4:01.12.
Mark Magyar finished second in the 400 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 58.17 seconds.
Rounding out the Yellowjacket scorers on the day was
Mitch Lienert who finished fourth in the 200 meters (22.68 seconds),
Andy Freeman who ended fifth in the 800 meters (outdoor PR 1:58.76) and
Ashton Tokarski who claimed eighth in the high jump (1.71m).
This meet also sees several graduates of the University participate in an alumni mile and other Rochester organizations compete in a 4x100 meter relay. During the alumni mile,
Zach Spergel, 2024 grad, claimed the crown in 5:11.08.
UR's mixed alumni group edged out four football players to rank in first place in the relay, with
Madeline O'Connell '24,
Susan Bansbach '23, Gabe Lundy '23 and Luke Lyons '23M, winning in 45.92 seconds.
The next meet on the schedule for Rochester is the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic taking place next Saturday at 10 am in Pittsford, NY.
